Pantera - Drummer Vinnie Paul Dies At 54
Tragic news arrived this morning. Former Pantera and Damageplan founding member and drummer Vinnie Paul has lost his life. Vinnie Paul was currently playing in heavy metallers Hellyeah. Along with his brother, guitarist Dimebag Darrell, the legendary drummer Vincent Paul Abbott formed Pantera in 1981. As of yet, no cause of death has been revealed but his representatives have confirmed his passing.
Pantera's official Facebook page released this statement: "Vincent Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away. Paul is best known for his work as the drummer in the bands Pantera and Hellyeah. No further details are available at this time. The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time."
Following Pantera's demise, the Abbott brothers formed Damageplan in 2003. The band was performing on December 8, 2004, when Dimebag Darrell was shot and killed onstage during a concert in Columbus, Ohio.
Several musicians have already expressed their condolences and praised Paul's influence and legacy with Pantera.
"Can't believe it. R.I.P to our brother Vinnie Paul," Anthrax tweeted. Paul Stanley of KISS wrote: "So sad to hear of the death of Vinnie Paul. Loved when Pantera did shows with us and in later years Vinnie was always front and center at all KISS shows. RIP and condolences to his family."
Megadeth's Dave Mustaine wrote: "I just woke up in Belgium to the news that my friend Vinnie Paul has passed away. Another metal hero taken too soon. Say hello to Daryl for me. Rest In Peace, my dear friend."
