Ronnie James Dio - Hologram Tour Coming In 2019

Remember when a hologram of late heavy metal legendary singer Ronnie James Dio set out on a world tour, backed by musicians who played with him? Well, there will be more of that in 2019. Billboard is reporting that Eyellusion, the hologram company behind touring shows for Ronnie James Dio, Frank Zappa and pianist Glenn Gould, has signed with the Agency for the Performing Arts for more than 100 Dio Returns shows in 2019. Also appearing are former Judas Priest singer Tim "Ripper" Owens and ex-Lynch Mob frontman Oni Logan.

Launched in 2015 by Jeff Pezzuti with partners that include Zappa's son Ahmet Zappa and Dio's widow Wendy Dio, Eyellusion first presented the Dio hologram at Wacken music festival in Germany and then made the U.S. premiere at the Pollstar Awards in 2017 in Los Angeles.

"That's actually where I met Steve Martin and we began talking about touring plans for Dio," which is set to hit over a 100 cities in 2019 with an accompanying live five-person band, a first in live music.

"The big question when we first toured Dio through Europe was 'Is anyone actually going to show up?'" Pezzuti tells Billboard. "We sold out the last three shows in Europe and we did really, really well. We're such believers in what we were doing and we're all such massive fans - in my sixth grade class picture, I'm wearing a Dio shirt, so you can imagine taking this all the way across the finish line has been a dream come true."

Dio Returns hits the road in April and Eyellusion is also planning a tour for Zappa: "The Zappa show is going to set the bar for everything and totally blow everything else out of the water. It is the most incredible visual show that's ever been assembled and every song has a different look and feel. It's going to be an absolute mind fuck, in a good way."

How has this become a thing? I saw a while ago that there was a Roy Orbison hologram show. Can I just say cash-grab?
Who'd wanna go for such a thing? I wouldn't. But then again, what do I know...

^ both use a gimmick to attract their audience, so not much difference I guess. I would not go for a lazer floyd show either.

Would be more fair for the fans to release old shows in 3D/4D/5D/whateverD in the theaters instead of faking a "concert" like that =/

What does it matter how it is different. We're bitching about Dio, not Pink Floyd. Make a news piece about Pink Floyd and I will bitch there too.

Can someone explain to me what the problem is with this? Properly! Not just "whaaa it's a cash grab" bollocks or its a scam for fans. Clearly its not a scam, it's advertised as a hologram. They are not claiming it's really him.
Would you watch a film with someone who has died in it? Do you still watch old DVDs of live performances with dead artists? In the Freddie Mercury bio film most of it is Freddie's voice singing, he's dead, so is that a cash grab too?

I agree for the most part; I don't have a problem with all this. If people want to see it --and they clearly do, since the first tour made enough money to do another one-- then why not... The reason why (obviously money is gonna be a big one for a lot of people behind this) is irrelevant to me.

As potentially distateful as this is it's not a "scam." Pretty hysterical to describe it as so. Perhaps Daniel should consult his 14 thesauri, or however many he once said he had.

I'll try to explain and I'm not going to use the "cash grab" argument because cash makes the world go round anyway. What disturbs me about this is the fact that I find it disrespectful to the artist. And tasteless to be honest. Also, we cannot ask Dio if he approves of this (but I guess the same goes for a bio film of a dead artist so you have a point there).

I do watch films with dead actors but I fail to see your comparison. Those films were made when the actors were alive. I also watch live performances of musicians who are now dead but they were filmed/recorded when they were alive. A better comparison would be watching a theatrical play in which all the actors are alive except one *insert any legendary dead actor here* and they have used his or her hologram. Does this makes sense?

Of course anyone who wants to go see it can go see it, especially if they have never had a live experience of the great Dio. Still I find there is something really fucked up about this though.

I think it was 27.
And I do think it's a scam. A braod-daylight-robbery scam. Completely disrespectful to Dio himself.

Pretty sure a scam means people aren't getting exactly what they think they're paying for, which is not the case. It's advertised as a Dio-hologram and that's precisely what it is. Perhaps a dictionary would be more appropriate than a thesaurus here.

Couldn't agree with you more, despite how much I despise this nonsense. A "scam" involves deceit, which there is none of going on here. They're selling it as a Dio hologram concert, and that's exactly what you're getting.

I don't understand how Death To All was acceptable, but this isn't.

Death To All worked because for the role of Chuck they realized that if they can't perform with Chuck anymore, the next best thing to do would be to have some more contemporary death metal guy who's been inspired by him fill in on vocals, for instance they had the Obscura guy do vocals at some shows as well as the Exhumed guy.

For this they could make things at least semi interesting by finding some well respected power or folk metal vocalist to fill the hole left by Dio, but clearly that requires too much effort.
