The music of Ellipsis, this is not something that you can listen to everyday. It was already "different" on their previous albums but for sure "Imperial Tzadik", their new release, is probably their "craziest" album of their whole discography. Their depressive and dark Progressive Metal which is not so far of Doom actually is really original and surprising. For sure if you're looking for something unconventional, "Imperial Tzadik" is for you?
It's not so easy to describe the music of Ellipsis. The band clearly has its own sound which is oriented toward Progressive direction and Doom Metal. Without being slow however, the different songs of "Imperial Tzadik" are complex and tortured. Plus, the great voice of Emmanuelson which is a bit similar to the one of Warrel Dane sometime, gives a real different dimension to these compositions. With some little Jazzy touches (especially with the guitars) with sometime some insistent riffs and always with some disturbed but really beautiful gloomy melodies, "Imperial Tzadik" is a bit like the Doom side of a Nevermore (it's an image of course, the bands doesn't play the same kind of music but?)
Produced by the great Terje Refsnes at Soundsuite Studios, "Imperial Tzadik" doesn't suffer of any comparisons with the big bands of the Metal scene. It's clean as hell sounds like a big production and the beautiful songs full of poesy and emotions are really convincing. With its different kind of music, Ellipsis proposes with "Imperial Tzadik" an album which doesn't suffer of any real problems and that all the fans of Doom, like Heavy, Prog or Gothic music will enjoy.
"Imperial Tzadik" is a really good surprise. Ellipsis found the way to write something different, something unconventional that will give you a lot of pleasure. It's different, no so common and the good performance of the musicians in addition of their nice compositions is really convincing. If you're looking for a band which is able to propose something new and if you like dark music a la (new) Katatonia, "Imperial Tzadik" is for you without any doubt. "Imperial Tzadik" is a great follower to the nice previous album "From Beyond Thematics". This is a confirmation of the talent of this French band.
