A really interesting question, IMO.
Everyone in MS like metal but I'd like to know the reasons.

Personally, I like metal because:
*Metal is a really creative music, because you find lots of different styles, from melodic metal, combinated with classical, epic, medieval music to extreme metal.
*I feel represented with metal, due to the variety of genres, I feel represented specially with melodic
*Many metal bands are full of culture
*In metal you find true musicians that don't do that music that you hear for some months and then it's completly forgotten
*Many musicians and metalheads are really interesting people and thanks to metal, now I feel that I have really good friends

These are the reasons I remember now, what I can affirm is that since I listen to metal, I'm a very different person, and I find many things of myself thanks to it .

So, what about you?

Of all existing music, Metal is the only who defined my way of living, that's why no matter which genre I listen, I feel a deep connection to their strong way of communicate

I like metal because of they way it makes me feel. What I mean is that for some reason this music gets to my bones and moves me, and I think that in some way it's made me who I am. Like The Alchemist said, the variety of genres makes you feel represented with it because it has so much to give in very different styles, so it's very easy to 'feel' the music and in some way understand what it's saying.

I love metal because of that, because it's made me who I am, it's changed my way of looking at things, and it just gets to me like nothing else.

I love metal because it is the most variated music style, there are so much styles and every style has it's own styles. The music satisfies me and can really help me relax or concentrate. Listening to metal while having math in school is a perfect combination. Metal is also the most intelligent music style IMO. And the most important thing, metal is MUSIC! That rap and hip-hop shit is not music, it's some simple drums and bass with a guy talking.

Metal is, simply put, one of the broadest genres in the world today; only two musical genres match the breadth of metal, and both of them are incorporated in metal genres-classical music and folk music (proper folk, not that country and western crap). Metal is in fact a meta genre, in my view, and it is so varied that you could stay in metal your entire life, which would be considered 'narrow minded' by non-metalheads, and yet listen to everything from Black to Symphonic metal! Also, my favourite metal bands get me going like no other band can-there's the theme that metal is not just music. It is a full art form, utilising visual art (album covers and stage sets), written art (the vast wealth of deep, thoughtful, historical or just plain intelligent lyrics) as well as the music to set a scene. In the same way that you can gaze at a painting such as Michaelangelo's 'The Final Judgment' for hours, I can spend hours looking at Iron Maiden's 'Somewhere in Time' cover. Reading Dante's Inferno, I lose myself in a terrifying vision of hell. I can do the same witb Iced Earth's version, and with Iron Maiden's Paschendale I can lose myself in the horrors of WWI. Good music shouldn't just capture your attention for a few minutes, you should lose yourself in it.

To illustrate my point, I love classical music. One of my favourite suites is Holst's Planets. When listening to Jupiter, I do not see, in my mind, a group of musicians playing in a hall or studio. I can see the mighty God of Jolity, and when the slow, emotional bit hits in (anyone who's heard Jupiter should know this), it tugs a note on my heart...just like Paschendale, or Nightwish's Ghost Love Score, or Iced Earth's Travel in Stygian. All these songs take you away, and that is what is so good about metal for me-the escapism. I can literally lose myself for hours in music, of all different genres, in metal alone! The vast range and skill of the musicians involved is incredible, as well as the sheer number of instruments and variety of vocal styles (well, okay, most of the former come from folk metal ), and the variety of themes touched on is amazing for a genre that's seen as mindless noise by the unwashed masses. While I do listen to Hard rock, classical music, prog rock (and that's about all, I think), Metal is my main love, because it brings all those elements together into beautiful harmony...

...of course, turning up to eleven and thrashing your heart out is damn good stress relief as well :p

Hm well my story is completely different I don't listen to it due to this and this fact; I was just growing up under infuence of my cousin who introduced me to bands such as Guns n' Roses, Metallica etc. in my early years. So consequently I loved rock music and later on when I started to reach beyond the boundaries of rock I came to metal. And metal is just something that makes me feel good, I feel the music and enjoy it more than any other genre.

I love metal because it is so artistic and it has already been pointed out that there are many sub-genres. Metal has just a wide variety. There's old bands like Black Sabbath that are considered metal and there's death metal. There is a big difference between Sabbath and lets say a band like Nile, but they are both considered metal.

Also, metal really means a lot to me as a person. If I'm feeling angry I take out my anger by listening to Slayer, or some death metal. Some bands lyrical content like Opeth means a lot to me and I can relate to the lyrics with my own life.

Metal musicians are also the most talented. It takes some bands a lot of skill to make the music that they can make. I'm not going to discriminate against any other music for not being talented, because I believe that everyone has their own kind of music that they like.

Metal just makes me feel good and it is the genre that I like the most.

I find it so diverse, the lyrics range from depressing suicide note type things, to graphic descriptions of violence, to stories of epic battles, to historically based lyrics. Influences from folk and classical as was mentioned earlier, the amout of talent needed to play it and the fact that it makes me feel good

Well....Personally i find it to be the most flexible genre ov all, you can play it how you want to! Metal is all about keeping it real and being true to yourself. Emotionally, i feel a deeper connection like I'm on the same page. Plus when the instruments get techniqual, it is simply orgasmic. Also as far as say Power or Heavy Metal is concerned, I have a very unhealthy fetish for men who sing high pitched (i don't mean that in a sexual way ) . Plus many ov the bands are Agnostic as am I. Metal is sooo...... ME!

Well, I'm a musician, and It's my desire to push my skills to their limits, and with me Metal is the most diverse genre of music and thus has the most to offer me, it can be complex or simple, and most of it is technical. I love how it crosses neo-classical and jazz influences with deep disrupting lyrics. I also Like how it mixes rock and Blues influences with High energized Vocals. It's all great to listen to and fun to study.
Also I have some problems with certain people in my life, and metal is the music of rebels, I can relate to it and connect with it really well, that's the same reason why I like rap so much, because lyrical context of both genres can have(Notice I said CAN have) extremely intelligent, pollitical, rebellious tones to it(Ice Cube!!)
So.....yeah.....that's why for me.

Metal's creativity is a main point for me. There's something for everyone! If you're angry there's Death/Grind. Depressed, there's Suicidal Black Metal and Funeral Metal. And for the perky bunch there's European Power Metal.

There really needs to be no other music (wow, that was kinda pretentious). But, if there was only Metal, it would loose some of it's alure. Real underground metal is percieced as something dark and dangerous, which is sexy to alot of people. Metal just has to connect with your soul, and I'm glad it's connected to me.

Metal music for me is one of that things that make me different from other people. It doesn't mean I listen metal just to show off... I adore it. And I feel that I'm very special, if I love this music and I understand it. Moreover, in metal music there are many talanted and really interesting but not well-known bands, so i can always find something that suits my music taste best and then watch how this band improves.

As for music, i never liked light sound (that doesn't apply to acoustic guitar). And metal.. hmm.. it is metal And in some its subgenres i found that beautiful mix of melodic lines and heavy guitar riffs (yeah, i like melodic metal).

Oh, and another point for metal are concerts. Great place where i can release all my energy and bad emotions

In conclusion: maybe, there are more reasons why i listen metal, but i still haven't found them all... or will i ever find ?

Must you constantly attention whore? If you had read the posts thoroughly, you would notice that people were describing metal as their favourite genre, and not excluding all other types of music. Also, they were describing metal as being most artistic...to them. And I don't even know where you got that thing about trends from...

The creativity and skill possessed by the musicians is what lured me into metal, much like other posters in this thread.

Lyrically, it also grabs me as a genre, exploring what I would have initially doubted to exist in some cases, a dream come true, really... (but not in that soppy sense of course!) almost unimaginable but undoubtebly real...:banger:

I like metal because I can never get tired of it. All the songs that can be heard on the commercial radio channels sound like they´ve been made a thousand times before. But metal is so varying genre that I can always find something new that I like. The songs still sound good after I´ve listened them hundreds of times.

Metal has so huge variety. It suites almost in every ocassion for me at least. When you're sad there's melancholy and consoling, when angry there's aggression, when happy there's energy. There's also beauty and mystic atmosphere. My mum once asked me if I feel bored that all the songs names are so depressive or violent. But no.. Ofcourse it's true but I really don't know, I mean that it doesn't bother me at all. I kinda feel there's deeper and true feelings in tha music I listen than in some over cheerful or comerical pop music (there's still good pop music too)... I do listen other music too, not oly metal, but that's my answer for the question. And all the lyrics are not supposed to be taken seriously although there's suicides and blood

I agree with you, metal suites in almost every ocassion and has a lot of feelings, and yes, many songs may sound quite depressive but there are others that have names that show different and interesting ideas, not only sad feelings
As for the beauty and mystic atmosphere it's completly true, not many kinds of music create such a great atmosphere like metal does

It makes me feel good and it has a lot of feelings which are expressed not only in lyrics but in the music: lonelines, despair, happynes, pride, revenge, anger, hate. Hell, it can even be sexy ands lusty (check Pelican).
Also it gives em the oportunity of always discovering new things through new bands, new emotions, new styles. Variety is pleasure.

Because I feel conected with it. When there's a song about an adventure I feel like I'm that hero, when talking about feelings, it's most of the time like that they were writter from my soul, because listening to the lyrics I can start thinking in another way. Because when I listen to metal, I get lost in another worl; my life, problems, feelings desapair and I can have my peace. I can headbang with songs I like and I always find something, that makes my day special, because in metal (like everyone already told) there are so many styles, that you can always listen.
To end with: with metal I'm who I'm. I don't have to pretend, I don't feel like I should hide who I'm. I'm proud to listen to metal, no matter what people say.

It's very varied and atmospheric material is easy to find within the genre without it being labelled as ambient music. I listen to a lot of other types of music but none of them have connected with me as deeply as metal.

I really like metal because it offers such a diversity of styles. There's music for basically every mood, whether it's partying or being in love or being depressed. I also like the fact that you're not bound to certain song-lengths, instruments or style of vocals, which is really good because you always find new and interesting things. And finally, I like that it's (mostly) not 3-chord-songs without any depth.

P.S. I am writing an essay about metal (40 pages+) right now and I would be interested if any of you had something to say about why they like metal/if they play/what they like most,...so if you'd like to share your comments on the music and the scene, please p.m. me - a big sorry to all the others that just read that and are not interested of think it's stupid...

Its differrent, non conformist, anti orthodox ways of life, good heavy musicians with amazing talent and motivation!

@Fallen Angel,
I will give you an example of the metal scene in Israel, we metalheads take metal very seriously since most people need an identity who dont fit in with your average Israeli who goes clubbing every shabbat and who is involved in nationalistic themes. Being an Israeli metalhead not only means that you listen to the music, but in Israel it means you represent a group of people who dont fit in, dont care about politics, dont give a shit about religion and that arent conformed to any parts of Israeli society. Also most metalheads in Israel are fairly poor. (at least in Jerusalem)

Yesterday I wrote an entry in my last.fm journal, about Metal, how did I discover it and why I like it, now that I have it clearer, I'll post the main reason:
So, why did I like metal first: mainly because of the variety of atmospheres it creates, like if it created pictures and environments in my mind (which is still like that nowadays), that made me feel identified with it.
Metal united my musical likes: world music, classical music with electric guitar, drums, keyboards, besides rock. And I also discovered that Metal was connected with my passions too!!: history, nature, literature...

Metal allowed me to see the world of keyboards and piano beyond classical music. I quit the conservatory because of metal. The diversity is what I respect about metal the most though. Metal might just be one of the most diverse genres of music along with rock of course, but metal still has more elements. It keeps being reinvented. Whenever anybody anywhere doubts metal for any reason, they're always able to find a band that reinstates their faith. Metal musicians are the most left-brained, most ready to take a risk musicians.
