How can I describe and estimate album which was my first of Black/Folk Metal? Is it possible to be objective? When something like "Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr I 5 Capitler" describes how a classical Black/Folk Metal LP should sound, you probably guess that my opinion about this can't be objective. But "objective" is not a essence of the good review...

Ulver is one of those bands that will never cease to either amaze or disappoint, and from where i stand, im always amazed.

We've seen Ulver create an album of straight forward and harsh black metal, and we've seen them release an album based entirely around acoustic guitars, clean vocals and a few other folkish elements. The album 'Bergtatt' falls somewhere in between the two, combining elements of both. While its not the most original sound ive heard, it sounds damn good.

Released 30 years ago, Bergtatt knocked my socks off first listen, lulling me in with the pretty calm and charming intro before unleashing the metal. The Thunderclap still takes me by surprise hundreds of listens later. Remains among my "Ten 10's" on Metal Storm. If you've heard this one before, no doubt you understand why I love it so much and if you haven't, stop what you're doing and go check it out now. You might be 30 years late to the party (and maybe 15-20 years later than my arrival) but it's still going.

Undoubtedly their best release to date. I can say that without fear of contradiction. Superb!

I wouldn't mind if the staff banned the comments on albums, because it's getting ridiculous.

Not gonna happen. It's not different than comments in band threads.

Just because k7 plagues this place with his god-awful sense of typing doesn't mean we're going to limit the amount of potential conversations for others by eradicating one of the most popular thread types.

I listened to the first three track on the bus this morning and was kinda disappointed. It was good, but not "10" good.

I listened to the first three track on the bus this morning and was kinda disappointed. It was good, but not "10" good.

The clean vocals on track 1 disappointed you? When I was first listening to it while using headphones, I thought someone behind me from outside was singing. Garm's vocals slay big balls.

Ah, one of those albums I used to quote as being one of my all time favourites, before I finally realised I only ever listen to the first track and skipped the rest.

I didn't really notice anything too special about them. Everything on here I had heard before, however I guess these guys are the originals though...

Which is exactly why it is 10 worthy imo. A compact album with no filler. Way ahead of its time if you ask me with so many bands nowdays owning so much to this album.

I don't know, I've heard better, even if this is ahead of it's time.

I suggest you to give it more listen. To me it was a grower.... Specially if you heard 3 tracks.... in the bus
Pretty much the prime example of how I don't check out music.

To me this album packs way more forest than many BM's entire discographies. Great atmosphere.

I'll probably listen to it on the way home (also on the bus ) and maybe at home, if I'm not busy.

Track 1 slays, but the whole album is strong. It's been a long time since I've listened to it. I feel like doing it soon.

Truly unique album. I like it a lot. And yeah, I can definitely hear where Agalloch got their inspiration from.

Some people are saying the first track is the best. I disagree: the last track is definitely my favourite, which might have got something to do with the vocals (the clean ones are good, but I prefer the screams to those), but it also has everything you'd want in a track, as in variety.

I actually like the first track the least out of all tracks... weird to see everyone here likes the first track so much. I think the last track is brilliant, definitely my favourite, but I like them all.

I wouldn't call it weird at all. The reason is very simple: It's the one that surprises you the most by being first and for having most clean vocals as far as I remember... I can totally see how that track surprised a good amount of people back in the day so that's the reason most people remember the album.

Yeh they were, I cant remember which Interview it was but I heard / Read one of the members (John I think) say clear as day that Ulver was one of their biggest influences when forming Agalloch.

Ah, one of those albums I used to quote as being one of my all time favourites, before I finally realised I only ever listen to the first track and skipped the rest.

Then from now on you've to skip the first track and keep on listening to the rest for 100 times, finally you will realize this album is more than 7.
This album is more to show off the "detailed and beautiful sounds of musical instruments", not really the atmospsheric parts of black metal, therefore there're great isolations in between harsh vocals and guitar works.
