Ulver is one of those bands that will never cease to either amaze or disappoint, and from where i stand, im always amazed.

We've seen Ulver create an album of straight forward and harsh black metal, and we've seen them release an album based entirely around acoustic guitars, clean vocals and a few other folkish elements. The album 'Bergtatt' falls somewhere in between the two, combining elements of both. While its not the most original sound ive heard, it sounds damn good.

Whats offered here is 5 songs of great music, its raw, its melodic and its carries the listener all the way through its 34 minutes without sounding dragged or tired. The listener is treated to flowing riffs, pounding drums, rumbling bass, tough guitars, acoustic guitars, grim vocals and brilliant clean vocals. All the elements necesary to create a metal masterpiece are present and impressively performed.

Track 4 (Gen Ztemme Locker) is an entirely acoustic song with haunting chanted vocal lines, its some excellent stuff and a highlight of this disc.

Unfortunatly none of its in english, so understanding a single word in the booklet is damn near impossible. But rather than trying to understand what Garm is singing/screaming about, you find yourself thinking about what the music itself is saying, and when the music draws you in, a beautiful landscape of wonders and sound is painted. This is excellent music for a cold and rainy night!

The production is good, and all instruments are clear and hold there own corners of the sound. So if your interested in melodic sounding, almost epic natured black metal, then Ulvers "Bergtatt" is a must for you.

How can I describe and estimate album which was my first of Black/Folk Metal? Is it possible to be objective? When something like "Bergtatt - Et Eeventyr I 5 Capitler" describes how a classical Black/Folk Metal LP should sound, you probably guess that my opinion about this can't be objective. But "objective" is not a essence of the good review...

Simply perfect! I've heard it incountable times and I'm not tired of it. I love this album, I love it sound and the all that I feel when I'm hearing it. There are no words enough to describe how much I like it.

There's nothing to add! Like it is said- there are even no words to exalt this band...
I'm just listening to it and I'm like ...

Yeah, it has that effect. I had to search the lyrics translation, since the booklet has only pretty images to me , but the lyrics are not that big deal, better just to enjoy the music of this wonderful work.

Indeed... If you enjoy Garms vocals Check out their second Album which uses only Clean Vocals (but beware it is not a metal album whatsoever)

The thing about BM is that it generally is not "easy to get into", obviously you like "At the Heart of Winter" so ill probably recommend you start with Immortals latest albums (All Shall Fall) which is about as easy to get into as black metal gets, And then work your way backwards into Immortals Discography.... It gets more KVLT the further back you go so maybe you will aquire the taste for the more Inaccessible stuff later.

Try some of these, they should be relatively easy to listen to (whilst not being crap):
Windir - Likferd
Borknagar - Quintessence
Wyrd - Huldrafolk
Vintersorg - Cosmis Genesis
Dissection - Storm Of The Light's Bane (more melodeath in my opinion but hey ho)
Arcturus - The Sham Mirrors
Emperor - In the NIghtside Eclipse
Summoning - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame
Forefather - Steadfast
Enslaved - Axioma Ethica Odini
Bal-Sagoth - Let Mortal Heroes Sing Your Fame
Fen - The Malediction Fields

As for this album, I used to believe that I loved it but I realised after many years that I only ever listen to the one track off it.

Thanks a lot. I think I'll like most of these. I already like Windir a lot. Before I read this post, I just heard Immortal's Battles In The North. Although I respect the band, that album is a whole mess. The production is as raw as fuck, the riffs (when they exist) are very dissonant. Dissonance + Atmosphere = Mayhem. Musical mayhem it was. I'm sure there are drumming mistakes there. Drums sound faster than the guitars.

I think you'll find that raw production and dissonant guitars are what characterises black metal more than anything else.

Yes, but they're also what destroy black metal more than anything else.....
I don't think the bands you suggested me use dissonance, which is good. Thanks.

Well seeing as that's what black metal was founded upon it can never destroy black metal - that's what defines it. You might be able to appreciate a few fringe melodic bands of the genre but if you can't get into the proper black metal sound then you won't ever really be into black metal. That would be like me saying I think death growls and heavy, fast guitars are what's destroying death metal.
