Seven long years passed since the game-changer that was Ordo Ad Chao got released. It was an extremely complex album with a sound so different from what Mayhem (or any other band for that matter) had done before, that a somewhat mixed reaction was to be expected. I gladly put my tent on the fan camp though. This is why Blasphemer's departure worried me as it turned more difficult to guess how the final product would sound like?

here and here .

I'm aware of their new full length and also the Single "Psywar", which I enjoyed a lot. But I didn't catch any news of the title being announced and was wondering how it flew past me.

Well, now I'm excited.
Does anyone know who took over the songwriting duties, now that Blasphemer is out?

I remember an interview where Attila said he shared the writting duties with Blasphemer, so we can assume Attila took over most of it. Maybe Teloch did take over a bit...

Holy dicks this is good.

Only listened to it once. It's probably my least favourite of the 3 as it's a little simple but still enjoyed it and it certainly fits with my ever growing perception of what the new album is going to be like.

Funny, I'd say it's my favorite of the three. I can't quite put my finger on why, but it impressed me the most. However I love all three of the released songs, so it's hard to really pick a favorite

Gotta say I'm disappointed with those 3 released songs...
But then again, I've been away from black metal for a good while now, so it's probably gonna take some time to get back into it.

Whoa this is so good. Only heard it once but it does definitely come to the level of greatness of OaC. Athila once more offers one crazy performance and the rest of the band also does everything very good. I couldn't find any weak point in this record.
After the new Impetuous Ritual, this is the best thing I've heard this year up to now.

How many originators / bands inhabiting the very earliest of specific genres, still define the genres they began nearly 30 years later, and even more effectively so than their modern equivalents? Sweet fuck all, that's how many. Mayhem are a rare exception. God these guys are good. This album is seriously noteworthy.

I would have to say that Attila has never sounded better than he does here. His ability to go beyond being a mere vocalist is truly unmatched. Pretty much any discussion about who Mayhem's greatest vocalist was / is is now rendered moot.

Good golly, Miss Molly. This is some prime stuff. A few more listens and it might even top Ordo Ad Chao.

That's what I'm afraid of because of sheer greatness of OaC. This is close to top it for me

Boy, these guys really made my day, this album is just pure fucking awesome! It has been a long time since I listened such a good black metal offering. I loved pretty much every Mayhem album, including the more avant-garde GDoW (which sounds great live) but this one has to be their best since DMDS, even better than Ordo ad Chao which I praised a lot in the past for its dark atmosphere.

You sound disappointed that it's good =P I'm fairly confident this isn't going to top Ordo; that album is pretty much sealed in carbonite forever, but it definitely comes close.

Yeah pretty much
Still I need to listen to EW a lot more. It must, let's say, survives the 40+ spins in the 1st month, as AoC did.

Not real BM, not old school , but whate ever direction bands turns into , seems they know way how play decent music?
maybe because band memebrs are personalities not copy cats?

If you liked the previous one (which you actually did) I can surely say that you'd like this one, too. EW is the natural extension of OaC.

Listened to it twice today. Not overly impressed to be honest, just sounds like a lot of black metal albums I've already heard. Probably 6 or 7 kind of material - unremarkable but not bad.

I'll come back to it at a later date to see if my initial thoughts are just mood-based but I don't imagine my opinion is going to change.

Could you recommend me some other bands playing similar to this album? This has some VBEism going but beside that, the only similar thing I can think of is their previous album.
