I'm never quite sure how to feel about Savatage. 'Gutter Ballet' just rips me apart, it's so beautiful... Jon Oliva's voice just hurts in all the right ways. He's got a perfect combination of great singing mixed with whisky and cigarettes... like listening to an angel that's been run through a jet engine. Criss Oliva (R.I.P.) had a magical touch with his guitar, with such a light, sparkling technique that combined a great sense of strong melodic hooks with a penchant for shred solos that never went over-the-top.

But this makes it sound like their whole career was spotless and perfect... which I don't want to claim. Zak Stevens isn't a bad singer... but he certainly isn't Jon Oliva. And losing Criss Oliva so senselessly just left the band without enough good keen guitar sense to put together songs quite as awesome as what he could do with his brother.

Trans-Siberian Orchestra is, I think, a better route for Savatage members, as it enables them to bring metal to a community which otherwise wouldn't respect it at all. I've seen TSO live twice, and nowhere else will I be able to see 20-year old guys in leather jackets headbanging next to a 60-year old woman in an evening gown and know that both of them are enjoying the same performance.

Amazingly you have described the great band and done justice to them which i wudnt have been able to do so decided to quote ya.

One thing thats missing is the fact that Savatage are a very underrated band and in my country among people listening to metal very few even know about them and i doubt it would differ around the world.

What a great band!!! I like them since the 80's (past Century ) and is one of the few metal bands that my son likes, he's fanatic of Savatage indeed and he likes Trans-Siberian Orchestra too. I think that "Hall of the Mountain King", Edge of Thorns" and "Dead Winter Dead" are their best albums. "Dead Winter Dead" is a masterpiece!!!! Did you know that Jeff Waters (Annihilator) and Alex Skolnick (Testamente) played with Savatage? I new it recently

I think they are a fortunate band to have had some really fantastic guitarist Alex Skolnick is fantastic, im also a testament fan, and his work there was amazing, i heard he was in Savatage, but i havnt heard his work with them. Al Pitrelli is fantastic, the first time i heard him was with Megadeth on The World Needs a Hero, i thought i would check out his work with Savatage, and i do enjoy this band alot. Definately they deserve so much more credit than they get.

One of the greatest bands of all time.Theres no one like em and no one will ever be. I love how they incorporate piano.I own Edge of Thorns, and Dead Winter Dead, but have a heard a lot of other songs from them. Dead Winter Dead has to be one of the most beautiful albums I've ever heard. The song "Not What You See" is absolutely beautiful especially when the vocal layering comes in,god I love that song. My favorite by them is probably Alone You Breathe off of A Handful of Rain,Conversations Piece and Follow Me are both really good as well from the Edge of Thorns albums. Criss Oliva should also be very missed, seeing as he was one of the greatest guitarists of all time. Jon Oliva is a complete genius and I also love Zak Stevens' voice,I even own Circle II Circle hahaha. Well Ive rambled on quite abit im sure you all can tell how much I enjoy these guys.

Savatage - Rare Pro-Shot Video Footage From 1992 And 1997 Available Online :

Savatage fans can check out two rare Savatage performances that have surfaced on YouTube. Go to this location to check out the band performing 'Tonight He Grins Again' at the Tampa Music Awards in 1992. The clip is believed to be some of the best existing live footage of the band's Streets album line-up (Jon Oliva, Criss Oliva, Steve Wacholz, Johnny Lee Middleton).

The second clip is from a special VIVA TV broadcast filmed during The Wake Of Magellan tour in 1997 in Cologne, Germany. Go to this location to check out 'Turns To Me' performed by the Savatage line-up of Zak Stevens, Jon Oliva, Chris Caffery, Al Pitrelli, Johnny Lee Middleton and Jeff Plate.

Oliva's voice reminds me A LOT of Robert Plant's [Led Zepelin] voice...it's quite simmilar and it adds a new dimension of appreciation for me lol. But Zak Stevens or Damond Jiniya [not sure which...whoever did Edge of Thorns] sounds too much like every other prog/80s metal band voice I've heard [i.e Bruce Dickenson, Tim Owens, James LaBrie], not that it's bad, just unoriginal.

I disagree of Ibanez... Zak Stevens (who recorded EOT, Damond Jynia never reocorded studio or live albums with savatage, just singed live) is a great and complet vocalist, he is very original too... He can sing Power metal, he can sing hard rock, he can sing progressive tunes, he can sing agressive ones, he can growl (not as good as jon, but...eheh)...etc...

Anyway... I got some Savatage live with Damond Jynia now...if anyone want, just contact me at msn.

Top 5 savatage albums:

1-Streets: A rock Opera
2-Gutter Ballet
3-Edge of Thorns
4-The Wake of Magellan
5-Dead winter Dead

with the band being from america, and it having tons of successful offsrpings like Trans-Siberian Orchestra, Jon Olivia's Pain, Circle II Circle, you would think the band would be a whole lot more popular....

but yeah, i went to almost all the cd stores in around my area, and the best they can do is have other metal bands like Bathory, and others...but nothing by savatage, or its offsprings. i went into 3 states in america to do the same, and still, nothing!
