"It's a storm of lies. A blizzard of lies. A hurricane of lies every day." This statement from one of the samples on the opening track, "To Crawl Under One's Skin", hits so deeply into what we are living today. The nightmare of being completely flooded with information, contradictory "facts" and the idea that everyone just wants the good of all. It's the others who are wrong. It's obvious, isn't it?

Neurosis talks about these themes in the context of faith and worship. True faith, pure and unsullied by the larger structures of power. It's what I think Enemy Of The Sun is all about. There's tons of other messages in their song titles, lyrics and symbolism, but faith is the one I'd like to ignore for now. It means ignoring the intent, but a work of art stands on its own - and Souls At Zero has stood at the center of my headspace for months now.

To be honest with you, I wasn't alive in 1992, nor would this album have resonated with me as it does now, 26 years later, if I had been alive and had listened to it on release, because it seems so current.

This album is apocalyptic like none other. The massive walls of sound of pummeling or shrill riffs emphasized by synths, three vocalists performing everything from cleaner but still desperate singing ("Flight") to the most desperate shrieks (all over the album, but probably most notable in "Sterile Vision"). Acoustic interludes serve as a relief, even if only for a short while. All over, however, the album also retains an incredibly psychedelic sound: The buried and distant vocals, the synths (see the mad pipes on "Flight"), the riffs ("Souls At Zero"/"Zero"), the ever-ritualistic rhythms and melodies, classical instruments and even a choir, everything.

While Neurosis's following albums are perhaps more massive in scale (Through Silver In Blood), scary (Enemy Of The Sun) or introspective (Times Of Grace and their albums after that), the combination in Souls At Zero is unique. Contemplating the end is not only one of these things, but all combined, and the apocalypse also always has a psychedelic edge to it, present here like in no other Neurosis album.

While the idea of circles on "A Chronology For Survival" serves as a slight comfort, we know that ours will come to an end. Maybe it's my German pessimism talking, but Neurosis seem to have agreed in 1992. Or "Takeahnase" makes me believe so at least - beyond the opening sample.

"Thieves called it property"

We've overstayed our welcome. We've been too wasteful for the sake of comfort, others for greed. Who knew that the endless stench of capitalist industry would corrupt our living? The answer is simple: honestly, most of us.

"We tried to tell you, now let us show you. You'll know the way."

We know the way, and it's terrifying, because it's nothing but downhill.

Nice review, my man

I know it's not about the album as much as it maybe should but I tried to sum up what was on my mind these last few months I've been spinning it at least 2 times daily.

Great review indeed. You captured the overall feeling with the album (and band in general) nicely. Neurosis has indeed a very apocalyptic "larger-than-life-events" feeling that is in my opinion unique to them within the post-metal realm.

Just a random question: Did you happen to write by mistake "Enemy Of The Sun" instead of "Souls At Zero" on the second paragraph?

Sadly it's pretty much unique, yes. AmenRa has some riffs that could fit (.The Pain. It Is Shapeless.) but not everything else such as themes, psychedelia, greater composition and the desperate vocals (though of course other directions are also valid).

Actually no, I meant Enemy Of The Sun.
I read some interpretation that sees this in the context of Crowley's idea of stellar, lunar and solar cults (religions based on how humanity measured time) that I find most interesting. The solar cults would be the current ones (now that days are the (main) way of keeping time with the days - ignoring the scientific definition here and using the common idea of it of course). And Neurosis doesn't like current established types of worship (see Takeahnase again as one of the best examples).

"Harvest their return, those who drive away the Sun" on the self titled song from Enemy of the Sun to me yearns for the return of some who stop the types of solar worship we have today.

I included that comment on Enemy Of The Sun because I think Neurosis is mainly a band that deals with religious themes (at least during this period of their music) first and foremost. There's some critique of current culture associated with that (some anti-capitalism in Takeahnase etc.), but it's not the main focus. So I mentioned it to say this review mainly contains a personal interpretation that (somewhat) ignores the larger picture of the band and focuses on some smaller side effect that hits me more personally.

Dude, you need to right more reviews.

There's currently only a very few albums that have not been reviewed yet that make me think hard about certain topics or that create big emotional responses. But I have a few drafts right now.

Amenra is to me a band that goes more into personal themes. More for the emotional introspection than a grand scheme of things like Neurosis that feel like an actual force of nature at it's core (and specially live, omg...)

Aaaah I see. I just thought the paragraph was weirdly constructed cuz the jump from album to album was too sudden so I was like "wait, wat?"

That's how I prefer to review music tbh. Go from my perspective and how it makes ME feel. And then apply some of the band's actual intention and see if there are connections haha.

Yeah I should've structured it better, I wanted to use it to present this primal, "true" worship idea that Neurosis go for a lot but I should've left it out probably.

Souls At Zero was my first breakthrough with Neurosis, years before Through Silver In Blood finally clicked with me. The first two tracks are brilliant. Really nice review, man.

Yeah the cover art is horrible and people don't talk about it as much as the following records. I had the same reaction at the beginning when I was getting into Neurosis.

I don't think the cover art is horrible, actually. I can't explain why now that I think about it.

So the sample that plays on "Zero" is a Nietzsche quote. And I guess it kind of underlines my point of view here.

"Madness is something rare in individuals - but in groups, parties, nations, and ages it is the rule."

We live in crazy and terrifying times, and we have for a while.

I've finally clicked with this album! I've been routinely visiting this album since I saw it at the #1 spot on your favorites list.

Wasn't a fan of the vocals at first, but I've now gotten used to it. I'm focusing on checking out post-metal after listening to Isis. I'm really liking these psychedelic atmospheres mixed with the occasional devastating riffage.

I'm gonna check out the other Neurosis albums next!
By the way, what's the difference between "post" and "progressive" metal?

Really glad you like it!
The vocals are definitely not like most other bands yeah, but I really like them for that reason. They sound so desperate. They're definitely fairly different to Isis.

Yeah they tend to be quite different. Progressive metal usually focuses on musical virtuosity and complex compositions, while post metal is often quite simpler (especially the Neurosis/Amenra variant) but focuses on density and atmosphere, some extra instruments here and there. Some people call post metal "atmospheric sludge metal" because of that reason as well. Kind of the same difference as in rock, prog rock and post rock are very different.
Though both can intermingle ofc.
