I chose a mix of all. I play a bit of Angra, a bit of Death, a bit of Immortal, some Iron Maiden and Judas Priest, and a bit of Megadeth. So I cant really chose one over another.

Metallica and Iron Maiden the most because they are well-known and I can play them with other people.

Though I am most interested in black metal and whenever I write and record music it's black metal.

Heavy for me, if you'll look at my profile you'll notice most of my favorite bands are just straight up heavy metal, for me all the extravigant genres are fun at first but after a while they just get cliche' and repetitive, but heavy metal will always sound powerful to me.

"Heavy" - it's by far the most fun style to play. You can rock the fuck out, but there are still plenty of bits that require finesse/attention/whatever.

Heavy metal cause it is the most interesting to play, but I am concetrated of riffs, I don't bother myself with because I dont' find it much interesting to play without background. Sometimes I also like to play some black metal harmonies or some thrash/speed riffs, but still, usually it is heavy. Go Kai Hansen!

I use to only play Judas Priest because thats all I listened to, back when I was barely open to any metal or bands. It was only Judas Priest and Ozzy for me back then.

I don't normally play stuff by other bands, normally I create my own riffs/licks. But I guess I do know alot of Megadeth songs as well as alot of chili peppers (I know not metal)

But the metal I normally play....well I strive for a large range in sound, so I go anywhere from power to Death metal riffs, and I have a little grind project goin'. I play Thrash riffs the most easily, but I can play pretty much any genre without a problem. I would say Prog is the most challenging, and even then I can pull it off. I would like to play some Prog-death sometime.

sure, and maybe i'll never see the day when i can play the intro for nightwish-wanderlust perfectly, but regardless of genre, difficulty, and wether or not it's your stuff you play, you have to feel good when you do it, or you'll end up a stupid malmsteen/michelangelo batio wannabe who just shows off his playing skills

I'm the only one that selected black on the poll? Weird.

I just experiment with my guitar, but almost always in vain of trying to create something black.

Yeah actually I have, I wrote about 5 songs which were redone from 8 songs. But its hard to meet people that would be willing to try or play the music, cuz most of my friends dont play in the same style as most of the bands I listen to. Also to really hear the music is hard, because I need a good drummer for that.

I voted for Power/prog (dunno why they're in the same category) coz its the most genre I play and coz I think that this genre really helps in developing my guitaring skills, and second would be thrash coz I'm mostly a thrash-head and it gives me this great feeling of owning the guitar

That's cool, yeah I think it's important to be able to create good music because most metal heads just play material by other bands, and never become creative enough to write their own riffs. That's what I mainly did, I just kind of played around and stuff, I mean I learned other bands material, and if not for megadeth I probably wouldn't be able to do what I can today. So all musicians listen up, practice practice practice your basics, but also practice creative skills.

I play thrash metal the most. I've gotten into metal thanks to early Metallica albums, it's what got me excited. Thrash riffs are fun to play, and to me, a good riff sometimes means a good song.

I've wrote lots of separate riffs I play regularly, though they're sometimes followed by proggy or heavy parts. Sometimes power and even death metal.

But really, I play guitar for fun, and thrash is fun

I dont think I explained myself fully. Another great thing is the skill level, while alot of other genres require a certain skill level for certain instruments (like black metal needs a somewhat decent drummer), etc. Whereas heavy you can make it sound good without having top notch musicianship.

Like I said, I started off playing mostly thrash, but it was Megadeth that did it for me. I agree with you, thrash is the most fun to play, it's fast, fun, and easy.

I'm trying to be as most versatile as I can, still exploring new stuff not necessary from metal area. Mostly I play thrash/death metal (riffs) and neoclassic power (mostly soloing), but I'm always open for blues/rock experiences. Anyway my home is extreme metal, often technical.

Personally, I play Jazz/Progressive/death metal, I'm still not professional though. Bands that got me excited are Gordian Knot, Cynic and for sure Office Of Strategic Influence. However, playing death metal in the house doesn't make my parents very "happy" if you know what I mean . Thanks god I've all the weekend to throw my rage out.

I play all styles of Metal. Wherever areas I feel that my skills are lacking in, I play songs by bands in every genre. If I want to work on my palm muting, I play death or thrash metal. If I want to work on my speed picking, I play black metal. If I want to work on speed-palm muting, then I play power metal. If I want to practice my lead work, I play a lot of heavy/thrash/power. It all depends on what skills I need to touch up on. I want to progress better as a guitarist. All styles have their own... feeling, and I love exploring all of the different aspects of metal.

By far the best explanation for playing a mix of all, everything stated here is so true!
