A really interesting question, IMO.
Everyone in MS like metal but I'd like to know the reasons.

Personally, I like metal because:
*Metal is a really creative music, because you find lots of different styles, from melodic metal, combinated with classical, epic, medieval music to extreme metal.
*I feel represented with metal, due to the variety of genres, I feel represented specially with melodic
*Many metal bands are full of culture
*In metal you find true musicians that don't do that music that you hear for some months and then it's completly forgotten
*Many musicians and metalheads are really interesting people and thanks to metal, now I feel that I have really good friends

These are the reasons I remember now, what I can affirm is that since I listen to metal, I'm a very different person, and I find many things of myself thanks to it .

So, what about you?

IDK, because other forms of music don't have the aggression I need.

Metal is the only genre I can find extreme melodies with inspired songwriting. Being quite 'nerdy', into science fiction, mythology, fantasy and deeper things like philosophy and seeing lyrics pertaining to these themes with the beautiful musical composition just makes me go crazy.

Metal is like comfort music to me.. When I'm stressed I can listen to a few new CDs or old ones and It picks me right back up.

I like metal because its the only music that has serious lyrics!!! really I know its sounds weird but its the only genre that talked about politics & the new world order corruption, crime & war.

Rap does that too.

I love metal because of it's mind blowing guitars, straight out of hell growls, the people who also like it, and the inspiration & energy it gives me.

The power. A good metal song sounds like the band is pouring their soul into the music and just releasing their inner demons on a C.D; just releasing their soul in music. Whether its done by excruciatingly slow crushing doom or rifftastic speed thrash doesn't matter- Whether or not the lyrics show any sort of intelligence also doesn't matter.

It's not that I like metal, it's that metal likes me. No matter what I am going trough in life, whether I feel happy, sad, tired or outraged - metal's there to share it.

Not sure whether that turned out awesome or lame.

Mostly lame, but that's because it's also my reason.

You cannot spell Power Of The Dragonflame without "lame"

Lyrics in metal is something I can better relate to than other genres' lyrics. Also they tell the best stories IMO. Then there's the diversity and many genres of metal, which I like too. I mostly listen to melodic death metal, but I don't want to listen to that all the time. For those times there's always power metal, black metal, folk metal, etc. I'm not an expert on other music styles, but I don't think other styles have such diversity. Also I mostly like complex music. Drums, bass and guitar usually isn't enough for me. I want keyboards too and I like non-typical metal instruments in my metal too. I'm thinking Eluveitie, Whispered, Equilibrium, Korpiklaani etc here. And aggression is a factor too.

Can't say really, why i like metal.
I just like it.
Maybe for the songs that reflect more myself than any other style...
Maybe for the variation of sub-genres and styles...
Maybe for... i don't known.
I just love it!

Metal has to be one the most open minded and most versatile genres of music out there.

The attitude is never one-dimensional.
It's more fresh and modern than any other genre.
Personally, it has more to say to me.
It rarely gets in your face about politics.
It challenges and questions authority
Practices free speech better than any genre.
The lyrics make you think and do so in a poetic manner unlike that shit Starbucks promotes.
The fan base is usually friendly. I mean, metal fans think of each other as brothers.... does pop or rap?
It's gotten me through the toughest times of my life.
It inspires.
and it's the last bastion of musical creativity.... It's classical music of the 21st Century.

I like it for a variety of musical and social reasons. Musically, metal is insanely diverse. The stuff I listen to can be quite musically involved and technical. Thrash, my favorite genre, also conveys a lot of emotion through the music. Socially, I like metal because it's like metals a party where, even if you're considered "weird", etc., it says, "Come on in, everyone else here's just as weird." So, I mean, it's just a great genre of music.

I remember the first extreme album I listened to was World Downfall by Terrorizer, then later I found anoher great bands such as Immolation, Death, Obituary, Morbid Angel, Benediction, Cynic etc. I don't know, I can't find any exact reason why I listen to Metal, they give me something that I can't find in other genre. but the only thing I know is, why I listen to Metal ? because it is in my blood

More than anything, because I love distorted guitars and gnarly riffs

I like dark music

There is a metal subgenre or band for anything and everything, whether I want to get an arty, progressive fix or just want to vent at my shit boss and crappy job on the drive home

Metal does not seem to be as wrapped up in tropes as other music genres. This kind of plays into my previous reason, but imo you can make a metal song about anything and it works, whereas genres like rap or country (shudder) only deal with a few subjects, none of which really apply to me. I like everything from philosophy to gore horror, and metal has it covered.

Because Maynard James Keenan is a metal artist.

It has such a gigantic amount of passion that no genre ever dreams of having. The lyrics also go beyond girls and love and sucky subjects. They reflect how bad the world we live in is. But over all of that, the awesome music, the atmosphere and the brutality.

There's so much diversity in it. You could go from early prototype Hard Rock to galloping NWOBHM to riffcrashing Doom to Symphonic Power to Sleazy Glam to Blistering Thrash to Brutal and/or Melodic Death to totally Avant-garde Black.

...And when you look back on it all, you realize you just barely scratched the surface.

That's actually why I hate metal.

Just when you think, oh ya, I've been listening to a lot of music, reviewing a lot, digging in the underground, blazing through the mainstream, treading through shallow waters and swimming through oceans of genres... BAM. 500 new albums you need to hear. D:

No kidding, even if you restrict yourself to a few sub-genres you're still looking at a decade's worth of good music. Sometimes more than a decade.

I would say something along the lines of never going back from black metal but I'm not sure if that would be misconstrued as a racist statement.
