Try Pantheïst. they're supposed to be depressing, but I find them very atmospheric and mellow.

Never could get in that genre either. altought heavy as hell I think it's pointless to go so slow on the tempo. Never had a shiver or any ball in the throat while listening to any of these bands. just a shitload of yawns.

I find it to be great background music, and i usually chuck on something like ahab, shape of despair or Tyranny when doing assignments; although you do get a much better appreciation for it if you sit down and actually listen to it.

I know Arcana Coelestia find mention above - if you try them and like them, following through the other acts to feature the same composer (MZ) might lead you to other bands that'd be to your taste. Although AC is the only one that I guess would strictly be funeral doom, with the others being variants of black metal, the presence he creates with Locus Mortis and Urna especially is similar.

04.08.2010 - 18:48 Written by Daniell on 04.08.2010 at 18:28 But Shape Of Despair is background music And what's blasphemy about them being used as background music. To many people, and me included, they are not the epitome of funeral doom. I would considering Unholy and Skepticism and Thergothon to be far more the epitome of funeral doom.

Yeah, I can't really argue that. Shape of Despair aren't the definition of funeral doom. I love them nevertheless.

Shape of Despair tastes great after Mourning Beloveth. I've just figured it out having played "Angels of Distress" after "The Sullen Sulcus"

05.08.2010 - 01:40 Written by Marcel Hubregtse on 04.08.2010 at 18:48 I love shape of despair, mainly because they were the first funeral doom metal band i ever heard; and also because they put me in a creative mood, which is vital for assignments and stuff. Also, they are the only band in the funeral doom genre that is actually depressing, i find all the others to be just relaxing.

Then again, it's not like I have their discography, I haven't even downloaded anything but heard mosly songs on youtube so I can't really discuss about it

The line between funeral and death/doom can be very subtle... almost no bands quoted on this page are - to me - examples of funeral doom...

If there were clear and widely acknowledged definitions of funeral doom and death doom, the arguments about which band represents which genre would make some sense. Since there aren't such definitions, why even bother bickering about that? Quote: Quote: That's you Marcel, in 2 different threads. And if even you, the biggest doom authority I've met, aren't 100% clear about one of the most notable and famous extreme doom bands... As long as there isn't (and there probably won't be) a single definition for these sub-genres, I'll call them doom. Let's drop futile attempts to categorise things that can't be categorised and just focus on discussing music?

@daniell you can't call them just doom cause that would also iclude Isole Candlemass Processio St Vitus My Whining Bride and such. can't call it extreme doom either cause death doom bands such as cry babies extra-ordinaire, and Officium Triste are death doom but not extreme at all. There is of course a huge difference between all the sorts of doom subgenres. Imo moreso than within any other metal subgenre.
