One of the most underground style's of metal, with very talented bands. I have been listening to a lot of funeral doom lately, and I really like it. The slowness and the atmosphere is just amazing. My fav bands from this genre would be Shape Of Despair, Nortt, Worship, Remembrence, Pantheist, Tyranny, Skepticism, just to mention the daily bands. What about you guys?

Try Pantheïst. they're supposed to be depressing, but I find them very atmospheric and mellow.

The thing with the Ea album I listed to, it was more relaxing than depressing, which is what Id imagined all funeral doom would be like. lol Im sure there are bands in the genre like that as well, but the melodic funeral doom is very listenable for me.

I still can't find a funeral doom metal band that will make me feel depressed. They can be intense as hell like Esoteric but the music crushing my bodhy doesn't mean I feel bad about it Most of the genre is relaxing imo.

Never could get in that genre either. altought heavy as hell I think it's pointless to go so slow on the tempo.
Never had a shiver or any ball in the throat while listening to any of these bands. just a shitload of yawns.

That's usually the most common response by people. Funeral Doom definitely isn't a genre for everyone.

I find it to be great background music, and i usually chuck on something like ahab, shape of despair or Tyranny when doing assignments; although you do get a much better appreciation for it if you sit down and actually listen to it.

I know Arcana Coelestia find mention above - if you try them and like them, following through the other acts to feature the same composer (MZ) might lead you to other bands that'd be to your taste. Although AC is the only one that I guess would strictly be funeral doom, with the others being variants of black metal, the presence he creates with Locus Mortis and Urna especially is similar.

That's too bad, because especially Ahab is actually complex and requires one's undivided attention to fully digest. Also, Shape of Despair as background music - that sounds like a blasphemy!

But Shape Of Despair is background music
And what's blasphemy about them being used as background music. To many people, and me included, they are not the epitome of funeral doom. I would considering Unholy and Skepticism and Thergothon to be far more the epitome of funeral doom.

Yeah, I can't really argue that. Shape of Despair aren't the definition of funeral doom. I love them nevertheless.

Shape of Despair tastes great after Mourning Beloveth. I've just figured it out having played "Angels of Distress" after "The Sullen Sulcus"

I love shape of despair, mainly because they were the first funeral doom metal band i ever heard; and also because they put me in a creative mood, which is vital for assignments and stuff.
Also, they are the only band in the funeral doom genre that is actually depressing, i find all the others to be just relaxing.

What?

Are you talking about Unholy from Finland? I never heard Funeral Doom in their music. Just Death/Doom... Incredible Death/Doom but not funeral doom

Weird because I totally agree with you with Thergothon and Evoken, but not with Unholy specially their last album.
Then again, it's not like I have their discography, I haven't even downloaded anything but heard mosly songs on youtube so I can't really discuss about it

From The Shadows is very ugly death/doom, Second Ring Of Power is more melodic death/doom, but I can't hear there any funeral doom.
Evoken is a rather death/doom than funeral doom band for me.

I said "almost no bands"... the ones you quote obviously are, although not 100% pure funeral, IMO... I don't know, these days I hear death/doom influences in everything! I need to erase and reset my brain... lol...

oops missed the "almost" part, my mistake. If Skepticism isn't 100% funeral than nothing is. As for deah doom influences in funeral that is only logical since funeral evolved from death doom.

If there were clear and widely acknowledged definitions of funeral doom and death doom, the arguments about which band represents which genre would make some sense. Since there aren't such definitions, why even bother bickering about that?

Quote:

i actually find it harder to categorize Evoken. At times funeral doom and at others immensely heavy death/doom

Quote:

yes the finnish one I consider them as much funeral doom as thergothon and evoken, two bands many people consider death doom

That's you Marcel, in 2 different threads. And if even you, the biggest doom authority I've met, aren't 100% clear about one of the most notable and famous extreme doom bands...
As long as there isn't (and there probably won't be) a single definition for these sub-genres, I'll call them doom. Let's drop futile attempts to categorise things that can't be categorised and just focus on discussing music?

@daniell you can't call them just doom cause that would also iclude Isole Candlemass Processio St Vitus My Whining Bride and such. can't call it extreme doom either cause death doom bands such as cry babies extra-ordinaire, and Officium Triste are death doom but not extreme at all. There is of course a huge difference between all the sorts of doom subgenres. Imo moreso than within any other metal subgenre.
