Playing on downtuned guitars is not "easier" or harder, considering most musicians play with a thicker gauge string on their downtuned guitar to compensate for the looseness. But it is easier with standard strings in a standard tuning, per se, than with standard stings in a lower tuning, or vice versa. You don't want the strings too tight, or too loose. It has to "feel" right. Same goes with pick gauge. But playing on an acoustic guitar IS harder, and will toughen your fingers up 10 times as fast, as well as your technique because precision cannot be distorted on an unplugged instrument. But for the BEST guitar warmup exercise, I like this one. E ---------------------------5678765------------------------------ B ---------------------5678----------8765------------------------ G ---------------5678----------------------8765------------------ D ----------5678---------------------------------8765------------ A -----5678--------------------------------------------8765------ E 5678-------------------------------------------------------8765 Focus on clarity and precision, and the speed shall come through repetition. I try and do this one 15 times or so, but change the fret I start on before each ascension/descension, such as 2345 2345 etc. Also, the single most important practice any guitarist (or musician) can do is simply run up and down the scales, in different keys. Major/minor scales, pentatonic scales, harmonic scales, whatever scales, because that's what music is made of.

This is an exercise I made by myself to help increase spontaneity when I'm walking melodic bass lines. Lets look at this exericize in A. Its basically set up in a way that, you minus one note on the bottom of the ascension and add one note to the top of the descent whenever you finish a measure. The key to successfully performing this is by consciously dividing each phrase or measure into two 4 note intervals. G[---------------------][-------------------][------------------][------------------][------------------] D[-----------------5-7][--7--------------5][--7-5-------------][-7-5-------------][-7-5-------------] A[----------5-7-8-----][----------5-7-8---][------------5-7-8][------8-------5-7][-----8-7--------5] E[---5-7-8------------][----5-7-8---------][------5-7-8------][--------5-7-8----][----------5-7-8--] [--------------------][--------------------][---------------------] [-7-5---------------][-7-5----------------][-7-5----------------] [------8-7-5--------][-----8-7-5---------][------8-7-5---------] [-------------5-7-8-][-------------8-5-7-][--------------8-7-5-] And now for other way around: Starting from the top of the octave: G[--------------------][----------------------][-------------------][-------------------][---------------------] D[-7-5---------------][---7-5---------------][-----7-5-----------][--------7-5-------][-----------7-5------] A[------8-7-5--------][--------8-7-5--------][---------8-7-5----][------------8-7-5-][--------5------8-7-] E[-------------8-7-5-][-5-------------8-7---][-5-7------------8-][-5-7-8------------][-5-7-8-------------] [--------------------][--------------------][---------------------] [-------------8-7---][----------------8-7-][-----------------5-7] [--------5-7------5-][--------5-7-8------][----------5-7-8-----] [-5-7-8-------------][-5-7-8-------------][---5-7-8------------] And so forth, practice in different keys and so on, if I have the time I will post more later.

I begun my practice with this one, its good if your pinkie is still weak, it help you to learn to how hammer your pinkie on and pull it off quickly, E ------------------------------------------7-8-10--------------------------------------| B -----------------------------------7-8-10-------10-8-7------------------------------| G ---------------------------7-8-10----------------------10-8-7-----------------------| D -------------------7-8-10-------------------------------------10-8-7----------------| A -----------7-8-10----------------------------------------------------10-8-7---------| E ----7-8-10------------------------------------------------------------------10-8-7--| then you can surely paly this one: E -----------------------------------------------7-8-9-10---------------------------------------------| B --------------------------------------7-8-9-10--------7-8-9-10------------------------------------| G ----------------------------7-8-9-10---------------------------7-8-9-10---------------------------| D -------------------7-8-9-10---------------------------------------------7-8-9-10------------------| A ----------7-8-9-10---------------------------------------------------------------7-8-9-10---------| E 7-8-9-10----------------------------------------------------------------------------------7-8-9-10|

Another exericize of mine, again, to build spontenaity of playing and independence of fingers while descending/ascending notes ( and lead notes that do not necessarily fit into the chord ), I do this on guitar as well. As the measures progress, you are starting on the next note in the scale, take this example in A: G]-------------------][--------------------][-------------------][--------------------] D]-------------------][--------------------][----------5--------][--------5-7-5------] A]-------5-7-5------][------5-7-8-7-5---][---5-7-8---8-7-5-][-5-7-8--------8-7-] E]-5-7-8-------8-7-][-7-8-------------8-][-8-----------------][---------------------] Then descending: G]--------------------][--------------------][--------------------][--------------------] D]-7-5-------------5-][-5-----------------][---------------------][--------------------] A]------8-7-5-7-8---][----8-7-5---5-7-8-][-8-7-5--------5-7-][-7-5-------------5-] E]--------------------][------------8-------][---------8-7-8-----][------8-7-5-7-8---] Haha, I like this thread, so I don't forget things that I practice. Written by [user id=32755] on 23.05.2008 at 13:53 Best place to look for examples: the bands you listen to AND experimenting with tremelo picking regarding 7th chords in the major/minor/dominant/diminished format. ( in my opinion ) EDIT: A new exercise I made, I realized after an amount of time that I focused too much on playing notes that were consecutive to the scale. This one defeats that challenge, by switching between the root and the next note in the scale. The key is too keep your hand in one position and have your fingers hit the next note without moving. It's harder on the lower strings, but I keep my index finger on the root the whole time. In A: G]------------------][----------------------] D]------------------][----------------5---7] A]-----------------5][----7----8-----------] E]-5--7--5--8--5---][-5----5-----5---5---]
