I'm suprised this hasn't been made yet...

Founded in 1988, Cryptopsy grew to become one of today's biggest leaders in today's technical death metal scene. Their singer, Lord Worm, is certainly one of the most notable aspects of the band, whose voice sounds almost strained, yet still powerful. Cryptopsy's music is very fast and aggressive, made stronger by their liberal use of time-changes and the intense drumming of Flo Mounier, who gives all of their songs a very prevalent percussive feel. This lineup released two albums, Blasphemy Made Flesh and their groundbreaking album None so Vile.

After 1996, Lord Worm left the band for his own ambitions as a teacher, and was replaced by Mike DiSalvo. His vocal style was very different from that of his predecessor, taking on a more -core style. His first album as singer was Whisper Supremacy. While many people were turned off by this dramatic change, DiSalvo was indeed a very aggressive vocalist. After the release of the band's fourth album, And then You'll Beg... DiSalvo quit in 2001 to pursue a family life.

After a brief stint with Martain Lacroix as vocals (who can be heard on the album None so Live), Lord Worm finally returned as lead singer on Cryptopsy's latest album, Once was Not. The band is now touring Europe to promote the album.

The first Cryptopsy album I heard was And then You'll Beg, and I loved it, so I suppose I like DiSalvo a bit more than some other Cryptopsy fans... of course, I now prefer Lord Worm.

Any other fans?

My favorite album is None So Vile. Flo is one of my favorite drummers of all time, but there are still those that can best him. Cryptopsy makes me quite proud to be a Canadian, as we do not have very many good metal bands. Slit Your Guts

I had learned to enjoy a lot "Blasphemy Made Flesh"... it's incredibly how rotten an album can sound.

Every Cryptopsy album just gets better with each and every listen."Blasphemy Made Flesh" is so fucking superb its not even funny,I just cant see how alot of the majority of people dont see just how intense and insane Lord Worm's vocals are.He blows chris barnes out of the water for brutality on "Open Face Surgery" and thats only the growls, how about the 30 second scream, and "Serial Messiah" has a crazy scream as well.Eric Langlois is definitley a bass god,but Martin Fergusson sure gives great competion on Blasphemy,I also really enjoy Flo's snare sound on the album, and as usual his drumming is inhuman. The riffs and solos are perfect as well,my favorite riff is the one on "Serial Messiah" when it kicks in at about 25 secs.,everyone needs to hear "Blasphemy Made Flesh" it has to be eqaully as good or at least second to "None So Vile"

I bought "Once Was Not" a few months ago and for some reason I just couldnt get into it....until now, for some reason it just suddenly hit me today. And Flo is not human.

Yeah I have "None So Vile", "Whisper Supremacy", and "Once was Not" and my favorite of those is a toss up between None so Vile and Once was Not. I actually do not mind Mike DiSalvo's vocals. I find that he is an acquired taste because I didn't like him at all to start, but now he's actually not too bad. However, he is still not as good as Lord Worm.

How much different does Mike DiSalvo sound? if you could compare him to any other growler who would it be/how would you describe him? ( the only Cryptopsy ive listened to is 'Once Was Not')

I can't think of anybody to compare DiSalvo to. His vocals are more like Hardcore vocals than Death Metal vocals.

He has no range at all. Mike doesn't really go low or high, and his mid range voice isn't even raspy. It seems as if he's trying to get low, but isn't able to do so. I don't know how, but somehow he's able to fit with the music. When I first listened to ...And Then You'll Beg and Whisper Supremacy, I thought the vocals were complete shit. However, he grew on me and I think he does a good job in making the vocals aggressive.

The only person I can think of right now that he sounds like is maaaaaaybe the lead singer from Dew-Scented...or maybe Peter Dolving from The Haunted, but with a slightly more death metal voice.

Good comparison. I think I'm one of the only Cryptopsy fans that like DiSalvo and Worm equally.

IMO Cryptopsy are more of a brutal death band than a technical death band. But nethertheless, theyre still amazing. None So Vile is a legendary album, and one that MUST be listened to by all fans of death metal.

Sad that Lord Worm was kicked out. He's one my favorite growlers too.

As for the band, just fan-fucking-tastic. I've overkilled None So Vile up to this point, and it never gets boring. Love that album. All of their other albums are great too, except And Then You'll Beg. Mike's vocals just didn't do it and the production sound on the guitars and drums was very sloppy at times. Still, it's an ok album.

While I love Worm and back in his prime he was my favorite vocalist ever, these days he's not much of a gem in terms of vocals as we saw on Once Was Not. He still writes incredible lyrics but his vocals aren't what they used to be, and he's acknowledged this. They weren't bad at all he just as quite the shoes to fill on that album after his older stuff. Anyway I really hope this doesn't delay the new album too much. I'm interested to see who the new vocalist is...honestly I wouldn't mind getting Martin Lacroix back, he's a sick vocalist, but the reason they dropped him in the first place was because he spoke too little english to write worthy lyrics, so I doubt it. But we'll see.

Whether he quit or got kicked out, it doesn't look like he left on good terms...saying stuff like he wasn't all that happy with Once Was Not and that he really isn't into Cryptopsy's music; not something you would say about someone you left on good terms with.

I think that Cryptopsy is one of the best death metal bands I have ever heard. Lord Worm's voice is perfectly brutal and as sick as I can imagine. Corpses scream their pain in the graves every time when he sings. Flo Mounier really knows how to play drums. Fast, skillful and aggressive.

You can read an interview explaining why Lord Worm left Cryptopsy here.

Very interesting interview, and cool to see Steve Thibault has moved (is moving?) to my home city! perhaps he will start a new band here and make the Calgary metal scene better?

Anyways, the reason I came here was because I recently met a guy who is aparrently really good friends with Cryptopsy (more especially Lord Worm), used to live in Quebec and hung out with Cryptopsy before Flo Mounier joined. He also says he went to University or College (I forget) with Lord Worm and helped out in writing lyrics for None So Vile by dropping acid with Lord Worm and locking themselves in there dorm room for days on end sitting at a table across from eachother just writing. This probably seems like a load of crap, but the guy seemed really on the level, and he seemed to know what he was talking about.

I think they should get the old vocalist from Kataklysm. His style on Sorcery and Temple of Knowledge would fit Cryptopsy, plus, he's also a crazy motherfucker
