Wow its great I get to start an official Pestilence thread.I cant say i'm a diehard fan or anything, cuz I haven't been listening to them that long.Well anyway I finally got the pleasure of buying "Consuming Impulse" and that is definitley brutal death metal at its best."Echoes of Death" is the highlight track for me it has every good element to making a great song.I also have "Testimony of the Ancients" as well, since I bought two from the vault,it is alright to me,its more of a progressive death cd i'd say.Its not that I dont like progressive death, its just not at the same level of intesity as "Consuming Impulse".I want to get the first album,if I can find it for a decent price,as well as "Spheres".So what are your thoughts on this band?

Pestilence is one of the best Technical Death Metal bands ever!! All their albums are fucking masterpieces. Every Death Metal fan should like them, they're (or were) really good.

Pestilence were great, especially on Testimony of the Ancients, where the timing of guitar solos is perfect, everytime the solos kick in I get this "the timing can't get fucking better than this" feeling, also the solos were dark and very characterful, Testimony has probably my favorite guitar solos ever. Anyway the other releases were very good too, but for me they didn't top Testimony. Then again, I find that Spheres has best Pestilence lyrics, especially love the lines "united pride-collective stupidity".

Ohh hell yeah,I bought that awhile ago,I like the uniqueness and technicality of it,but it hasn't hooked me as much as the other albums.

Musically, this band is fantastic. It's a shame that the vocals suck, but that's ok because the instruments make me forget about the dude that's in the process of losing his voice. And the solos......omg

I guess you are referring to Patrick mameli's vocals because Martin van Drunen's vocals kicked ass.

I was referring to both of them. I prefer my death metal vocals to be low, as opposed to a dude that sounds like he's losing his voice. I love the band though, especially Consuming Impulse.

I love the vocals, as I find them more aggressive than your average "cookie monster" kind of low growls, but each to his own , and yes, the band was amazing, my favorites being Testimony of the Ancients and Consuming Impulse.

agree...I like both singers equally, each contributed to a whole different sound on each album...these are the kind of vocals I listen to and like the most for death metal you can understand the lyrics clearly at the same time it remains aggressive, plus the technical attributes from this band makes the singing even better.

I agree with you, and think that Pestilence's vocals were much better from the death metal norm, as the über low "cookie monster" growl typical in death metal is usually fairly boring and lacks aggression (to my ears at least).

I have been into Pestellence for about a year and a half now. I like them alot, they are one of my favorite early DM bands. That being said, I still am not a die hard fan or anything. At least not yet, I need to get the money to invest a little deeper into them. Reguardless I love consuming impulse.

I heard Mameli's going to ressurrect Pestilence, he's reportedly working on the new material, which he has described as modern version of Testimony...and Spheres, only "more tech and way more brutal than ever before". The lineup will be Mameli on guitars and vocals, Tony Choy on bass, and Peter Wildoer (DARKANE, NON-HUMAN LEVEL) on drums. Personally I'm a bit sceptical over this whole affair, I hope that by "modern" and "more tech and brutal" he doesn't mean boring wank solos and unmemorable riffs over pointless blastbeats.

Sounds quite cool, Testimony is probably my favorite release by Pestilence(although it's quite hard for me to separate them in terms of liking). He managed to come up with good stuff before, so I hope this won't be disappointing. And you're quite paranoid of solo wankery

Pestilence

Pestilence were one of those classic bands that took the old idea, maybe Destruction or Slayer, and threw it pell-mell into the new idea, say Possessed or Sepultura, and made something great out of it. Starting as a death metal band known for its crushing songs, they moved on to become one of the founders of the technical death metal movement. Now you can see complete reviews of each of their works with mp3 samples.

Pestilence Review and MP3 Samples

...most specifically, a good introduction to Pestilence...

Pestilence - Chronicles of the Scourge

For those who appreciate the lure of classic-period Pestilence, making music halfway between the proto-death of Destruction and the upcoming technical death metal of Morbid Angel, this live album provides a delicious insight into both songs in progress and what the experience of a Pestilence concert might have been. With two shows, from 1988 and the following year, in reverse chronological order, this CD presents an opportunity to study this essential Dutch band in their formative habitat.

Shame the band is not better known, great weird Dutch Death metal. Still I can't stand Van Drunen's grunts, sure the cliche cookiemonster grunts are lame but at least I can listen longer to it. Van Drunen's drunk retard grunts makes me turn off the CD after the first song.

Apparently they have a new song up on their myspace. It's kind of boring though.

http://www.myspace.com/pestilenceofficial

EDIT: I just realized how mediocre the new song sounds when Suspended Animation started playing after that.

If that song will be a good representation of the material on the upcoming album, the album itself will probably be nothing to get excited about. Also the cover art is fugly.

I liked this new song but yes, it's very different from Suspended Animation... One song doesn't make an album and I'll wait to make my judgement.

Brutal and fast?
With current Mameli and Choy? Hell, they are 16 years older than on Spheres (althoguh Choy didn't play on that one) and 18 years after Testimony of the Ancients. And besides, Petsilence were never brutal or truly fast.
