So, what songs out there do you think are the hardest to play and why?

As everyone knows, I think that technical metal, progressive metal bands compose songs that are extremely difficult to emmulate..I actually don't know of many bands that cover progressive metal, at least not here where I live...even if they did, they only ever wind up covering one..I'm not talking about well-known bands here...I'm talking about bands that you guys are in...so yea, what songs do you think are the hardest to play? Also, a lot of death metal/black metal riffs seem pretty difficult...and speed metal...I dunno...

i think the hardest song to play on guitar which i have heard so far is yngwie malmsteen-black star, and on drums, death-painkiller(even harder than the priest version,if you could imagine that!) and slayer-angel of death. as for vocals, judas priest-painkiller(you have to have such a godly voice and a spinechilling range to sing it perfectly)

The hardest solo parts to play on guitar are: solo of the song "The Psalm Of Ludia" by Nevermore.(almost all Nevermore songs)
"Endless Sacrifise" "Dream of Consciouness" by Dream Theater
Jeff Loomis and John Petricci are one of the best guitarplayers ever

Not the hardest, but a lot of Keep of Kalessin's material from Armada is insanely fast and precise. I'm working on the title track.

I play bass, and I feel the hardest stuff to play is probably death, decapitated, and obviously necrophagist. Their bassists are just really technical and sometimes unpredictable, other than that Iron maiden can get alittle tricky; its just hard to retain the same sound and quality of steve harris.

Oh and Aghora, thats fucking unlearnable....

Foul Body Autopsy from Necrophagist got some insane arpeggios and riffs, also Spasic Ink got some insane shit, Watchtower, Spiral Architect and Twisted Into Form are in another universe...

Sleep Terror it's amazing, so technical, jazzy, brutal... It's just amazing, you gotta hear that.

There's a misspelled song.. it's "Stream of conciousness" not dream but Yes, Dream Theater has a lot of dificult songs.. but I think that most of the harder song are in Black/death metal for the speed of the drummers.. the constant blast beats switching to any beat with a "fill" in between each change and then again on a blast beat even faster.. wow it's amazing... also look on youtube for derek roddy or click this link for an amazing video I found... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I6u84suT6L8. but in guitar try "No boundaries" by Michael Angelo Batio... actually most of batio's songs are pretty dificult to play (see the double guitar solo) just look for whenever I may roam by Michael angelo... wow!. now for bass guitar? hmm... maybe some victor wooten or billy sheehan... keyboards... Derek sherinian, Kevin Moore and/or Jordan Rudess... also note that most of the best musicians are in metal (I said most not all of them)

Yeah, those kind of bands, even though the bass lines are learnable over a consistent rythm, tool is just one of those bands that have proggresive lines that is hard to understand and follow most of the time.

iced earth- watching over me.

but seriously, if anyone ever learned "black arrows" bass solo on manowar's live album, he'd deserve a prize, although i think that guy invented it on the spot
other songs:
dream theater-a change of seasons
iced earth-dante's inferno on solo guitar, damn that tapping part is just WAY TOO FAST.

Most stuff from suffocation...with the bizzare rythms and adverse tempo changes, it makes it very hard to learn.
Cryptopsy and necrophagist too...some of the new cannibal corpse as well...makes me fingers bleed.

Emperor - anything off of Prometheus, its so confusing and layered, and even when you pick out the rythm its still hard to play. Im stuck on the solo in empty...

@Hellraizer , yeah dude, Emperor have a lot off hard stuff to play. They may very well be the most 'technical' black metal band.

Songs by The Faceless seem really hard, as do a lot of the songs by Cattle Decapitation. The Faceless have a lot of sweeps, harmonics, and tough 'string skipping' and stuff like that. Cattle Decap have odd riffs and harmonics in bunches. It doesn't help that there are hardly any of their tabs out there, cause I would dearly like to learn how to to play Success Is and I won't be able to learn much of it by myself. That would be just dear.

The hardest shit I ever try to play is Annihilator. Jeff Waters is a fucking maniac.. God his riffs and those tempo changes, you must be real maniac to play his songs perfectly.. beside AnnihilatorI had troubles with old rock band The Rush, they are also very complicated.. I have more troubles with riffs than with solos, solos are easy to catch for me, but riffs, those weird tempos (Annihilator) and quick harmonies...
@Hellraizer and Dream Walker - Emperor's songs are so fucking weird that every time tried to caatch them I loose all my nerves and cuople of strings on my guitar, I stoped tryin'

I have less problems with complex rhytm patterns, because I've learned the accoustic guitar and know such things quite well, but I tend to have problems with fast solos and riffs, because my fingers are just too slow yet and its hard to reach high speed, although I must mention I don't play too much but I have started to play more lately.

Opeth seems quite tricky to play and some of Annihilator stuff too. I haven't tried to play tech death yet but it might be quite difficult.

Alright, on drums at least, hands down, it's Ticks and Leeches by Tool. and as hard as it sounds, painkiller is really easy. and anything gene hoglan does isn't that difficult, if you can keep up the kicks.

Defiantly "Show Of Hands" by Victor Wooten, don't play bass but anything that has 3 parts all at once sounds pretty hard to do.
