Over the past 12 months I have been listening to quite a few German Black bands, many of whom I hadn't heard of before and I must say that I have been quite impressed both with the quality and diversity of sound in the German Black scene. Bands such as Coldworld, Agrypnie, The Ruins Of Beverast, Lantlôs, Todtgelichter, Imperium Dekadenz all have quality releases to their name.
I personally think that if you like Black metal, then you should be able to find a band that appeals to you. Whether you prefer the melodic leanings of Dark Fortress or the avantgarde(and brilliant) Todtgelichter or if you prefer your Black to be a bit proggy then Nocte Obducta may be worth a listen.

In this topic you can discuss the known, big bands or bring new, interesting acts to light

Apart from France and the US, Germany probably has the best BM bands.

The French scene is the most overrated of all.

The first thing I've seen from you that I disagree with. lol

I agree that the French scene is one of the most overrated, and I've understood why Peste Noire gets so much hype... I personally think they are as mundane as you can get, not one redeeming quality. I myself think Eastern Europe has some quite good BM out there.

Different people have different taste. You might think Peste Noire is mundane and very hyped up, but for me they are one of the best out there. It's just the matter of taste.

That said, we should stop discussing about French or any other bands from other countries. Lets stick to German bands in this thread.

I am in total agreement. If you hear some really pretentious bm, chances are it might be French.

Especially DSO is annoying. Peste Noire has some okay-ish bass lines occationally though, even if they largely suck.

Moonblood is, although, way too shitty for my liking.

Best thing they ever put out was one of the rehearsals which features some solid raw black metal with an epic vibe. Most of the rest is pure shit (that means pretty much everything aside from the occational song which is solid at best). They are one of those bands kept alive because of the fact that they're so (in)famous in the bm scene and the prestige that comes with owning their releases.

A bit of the same deal with most of the French LLN stuff. It stands on reputation alone, with little to back it up.

French black metal.... There are some quite interesting bands that are influenced by black metal, whose music may sound "blasphemous" to the people who consider themselves to be "TRVE" black metalheads, bands like Alcest and Amesoeurs. It is good music, but derails from the style of the traditional. ^^

Much (not all) of German black metal is raw and somewhat distorted in their sound. Just the way I like it.

Amusing how people change their tune over time: "France has one of the best bm scenes in the world" http://metalstorm.net/forum/topic.php?topic_id=16318&topicsearch=&page=1

Blut aus Nord, Murmuüre, Bekhira, Svart Crown, Alien Deviant Circus, S.V.E.S.T., Hirilorn as well as the other obvious ones: nothing overrated about the scene from where I'm sitting (aside from the blazen obvious dross like Peste Noire, Spektr, Anorexia Nervosa, Antaeus et al). There's nothing wrong with pretentious metal either to be honest. Just look at BaN. Actually most of my favourite bands tend to be synonymous with terms like "pretentious" - the word is mostly used to describe bands with original or genre bending/pushing sounds that people decide not to like. In fact it should be abolished from the metal vocabulary altogether as far as I'm concerned as it's totally valueless when describing music.

Anyway, no one even remotely serious about summing up the French scene would even entertain LLN as contenders. Everyone knows it was 97% shite. The best thing that came out that scene was the Japanese so-called spiritual successors 'Arkha Sva' who are actually very good indeed.

I still think the UK is the biggest contender for true French rivals, especially given the relative size of the country, but I'm more or less alone in that assertion and that's probably because I've done a bunch of research and become a bit of a patriot where the scene is concerned.

Ah 2009. I'm guessing you would remember that, being the time when I was younger, high all the time and didn't make sense most of the time.

What happened? I dropped away from MS just about completely for about a year and during this time got (mostly) sober.

When I did that, DSO and SVEST weren't that fun anymore.

I've just posted this track elsewhere on here but I was so RIDICULOUSLY impressed by the album and this track that I thought it pertinent to share it on this recently established thread:

Now officially a fan of these Germans.

Hey dudes and dude ladies, just got into Necros Christos (death+christ) they are German but aren't fully black metal, have hints of doom throughout, and they so far have gotten my level of taste up in GBM. The name sounds as it implies as a Greek band, and they have long track listings on their 2007 and latest 2011 release, with lots of Hellenic inspired instrumental parts about... each album has 23 songs. But it doesn't disappoint at all!!!

Ya, Doom of the Occult is a sick album. When I first listened to it I drew a lot of comparisons with W.A.I.L.'s debut - top notch death doom (wouldn't call them black metal - just death or death doom).
