New thread for this great Finnish band

They newly have released "Before The Bleeding Sun" album. most of us agreed that there style was changed totally, and IMO the only thing still as it was is the voice of Altti. not gonna make a poll to ask whether if they are better after or before they are re-banded coz most ppl gonna vote without explaining as what happened on th old forum i created..!!

I hear a lot of resemblance to DT/IF and other melo-death, while ETOS is far superior and, as said, more like symphonic power, I still feel a comparison can be drawn.

Even if you didn't like the new album, don't give up on hope. This is an exact quote of what Jarmo said on the official forum

Well, that's what we've done all these years: changing, album by album. I'm 100% certain the next album will be different, once agani.

And the next album? Well, we haven't written any new, complete songs yet. But I'd like the album to be heavier and more unpredictible compared to the previous albums.

I always whizzed past this band as some overrated finnish band...

But Ive recently got into Chaotic Beauty and A virgin and Whore and I realize Ive missed out, the keyboard harmonies, the beautiful guitar leads and the music is just full and gorgeous. I cant find any weak link in these two albums. Is Before the bleeding sun and the previous albums as good?

My favorite songs are prophetian, Bhean Sidhe, aeon, autumns grief, aurora borealis, and the edge of sanity cover is really impressive.

I think Before The Bleeding Sun is thier best album, I love the more aggressive feel of it and the guitar playing on it is well good, plus Altti's voice is honed to perfection and on BTBS he really shows it, but the album is different to the rest and also like Kalmah having a new keyboard player gives the music a totally new sound and feel as did a 5 year gap between BTBS and the album before it.

A Virgin And A Whore isn't far behind it for me though The River Flows Frozen is one of the most beautiful finnish songs eh very emotional indeed, and Pasi Hiltula and Antti Kokko did a bloody amazing job on said album, cause it's basically the same line-up which recorded Kalmah's debut album minus Pekka Kokko it makes for an exciting mix and the result after Chaotic Beauty was very big indeed.

I basically think these 2 albums are thier best ones but everyone is different, I noticed not everyone was as satisfied with the new album as I was when it was released, and as for the one's before Chaotic Beauty in all honesty I don't like them at all I am like one of the biggest Finnish metal fans you will find eh to me they are similar to Sentenced's first album, sounding rushed, inexperienced obviously and and weak but that's just me so don't take it for truth.

Friend b4 the bleeing sun can't be their best IMO, give me any keys on it like that in Bride Of The Crimson Sea!! the music flow totally changed also it became like a better version of Wintersun, but it's far from being as amazing as it was ... and as you said, The River Flows Frozen !! no songs like it nows!! .. & about Kalmah dude they changed yes, but not like a 5 years of breaking up it still as the same level good!!

about the first two albums, the 1st one I listened forit very very well .. for the first time it was a shock to me .. I felt there must be something wrong, you know why? coz I listened to Prophetian on the MS radio here and was A M A Z E D the max. so I got their first album to doubt on it!! LOL .. anyways I can't else agree with you it is a weak recording & inexperianced, BUT the melodies themselves are !! man I can't find words to describe but absolutly they are from the best melodics ever played .. Velda'Mannu [sorry misspellings:lol:] it has many great tracks .. for more am gonna tell you

The (un)holy trinity you're looking for consists of the albums "Chaotic Beauty", "A Virgin And a Whore" and "Before the Bleeding Sun". Those are their three newest and also most successful among fans and critics alike. The earlier ones suffer from poor production, there are many good songs though but I wouldn't call them symphonic, at least in comparison to the newer material. Get any of those three albums, if you're interested in symphonic death metal I'm pretty sure you will be happy with them.

Thanks for the information. I have listened to their 'a virgin and a whore'. Its a good album, but I haven't listened to it many times. (I'll listen to it now) but I don't think this album is symphonic Death Metal.... not even death metal.

I agree with it's not pure symphonic, though it has synthes and so, but about the last album Before The Bleeding Sun it is really a symphonic style .. they added many choirs and so ..

still there golden era is among Vilda Mannu, Chaotic Beauty & AVAAW ..

Vilda Mannu is a great album i don't find it boring at all. maybe if you concentrate on the drums too much it will be. just listen to the music (guitars) and you'll hear some awesome melodies!!

Newer stuff .. hmm .. If talking about Before The Bleeding then am not with your side .. the only thing it's better than the first two albums is the sound quality + real drums .. else ? nothing ..

Melodies on the first album are of a hell ones!! I can't find similar amazing ones like them .. so melodic riffs I wish they re-issued the first album but with the style of CB & AVAAW .. that would sound to be the bestest album ever ..

@ Amro : Agree to the max

i agree completely, chaotic beauty is amazing and probably makes my top 20 all time favorite albums, not a bad song on the album, whereas i get bored with some of the songs on a virgin and a whore. actually i really like the new album also, and i put it somewhere in between a virgin and a whore and chaotic beauty.

I'm just waiting for them to release a new album.. I concider AVAAW their best album (second: Chaotic Beauty, and third: Before the Sleeping Sun). I really like the atmosphere of their songs, melodies & use of keyboards..

I don't think ETOS changed their style on BTSS (compared to AVAAW style) that much.. The difference in style is almost the same (to me) as when comparing CB to AVAAW. I also don't think the style is the issue on the new album -- it's just not as good as the previous ones. It's hard to beat an album as good as AVAAW. "Sakura No Rei" & "Sinister Rain" -combo and "Sweet Lilith of My Dreams" are some of the best songs they have done so far, but the rest of the songs on the new album are just average...

Btw; I hate it when metal bands add bonus tracks to their albums that will be released abroad (especially in Japan.. There's always bonus tracks on Japan releases). I wanted "The River Flows Frozen (Acoustic Reprise)" so much in my cd collection, I actually ordered the AVAAW album from Japan (as a Finnish person I had to order an album of a Finnish band from Japan ...great!)

Hello & welcome home, man, I have to disagree with you about that BTBS don't differ than AVAAW, well absolutly it differs.

Guitars tones themselves, became so slight and much polished, soft even, they now are concentrating on those hard-to-analyse sound mixes, specially when you notice that they played from those [with choruses & high voices all in all] at approximately most of the songs ending parts, while on the previous albums, they yeah used to add more instruments on last parts, like Autumn's Grief [keys], or change the tone like on Prophetian, but you still could be able to know from where sounds are coming, unlike on the newest album, it was full of keys, just like you're listening for two songs at the same time even sometimes, just like on Angelheart Ravenheart (my fav. track in BTBS).....

You know? at least, on track 3, Tony's (Sonata Arctica) voice even fit the music more than Altti himself!! while this won't be for previous cds. I know they used also guist vocalists before, they also did good, but this time it is .... just like a better version for Wintersun, sorry for the expression but it is now became so mainstream...

What do you think??

Glad to see someone who thinks close to the same that I do Eternal Tears Of Sorrow was one of my favorite bands up until the release of Before the Bleeding Sun. They completely changed their style on this disc! It's extemely frustrating to me that people cannot hear that the original essence of EToS is totally missing. I'm not saying that the new stuff is bad or good - it's just too different for me to accept. I rank BTBS as one of the most disappointing metal releases ever for me. The mix is different, and even the purpose of the music is different. EToS need a clean vocalist now - extreme vocals sound totally out of place with their new sound. I respect a band's decision to return to recording after a breakup/hiatus, but in this case, I wish they'd at least change their name... :

Thank you sir, my pleasure really I always enjoy reading your worthy posts everywhere

If I may second what you said, they should have changed their name, because that was a using for an already known name for the needs not to start building new reputation better getting a use from an already built one!!

If only they play back like in AVAAW, CB & VM those were albums from the least albums that are melodic but not chelchi (spelling) at all

Frustrated feelings huh Let's see if I can get this out right....

I listened those albums through just to refresh my memory & feelings. To ease your frustration, I have to say that I do realize the change in ETOS's sound on the new album. I do remember my reaction on the first listen being a bit "wtf...?" as Sweet Lilith began to play... The biggest thing to differ to me was their guitar sound. Also the emotion that AVAAW gives me is melancholic, dark, sad and even dreamy. The overall atmosphere of the music on BTBS is more frisky (I'm short on adjectives) excluding Sakura No Rei & Sinister Rain, and there's some symphonic elements there... But it's still no doubt recognizable as ETOS and I just can't say the style has changed totally...

It's long time since I had last listened to older ETOS, guess the whole BTBS has integrated itself in my mind as being big part of the ETOS sound...I have since lost the whole feeling of what's original ETOS and how the sound _should_ be. I do hoverer feel difference between AVAAW & older material too. AVAAW has more rich sound (it's more refined, modern, even soothing) with it's soft keyboads in the main part, whereas for example CB was more guitar centered and sounded more basic/simple (that being the reason why I liked AVAAW more).

In the end when we're talking about change in band's style, I end up thinking changes like: In Flames had from albums Colony/Clayman to their new material (from melodic death to near numetal -- that's more like the total change of style we're talking about) or with Nightwish from Wishmaster to Once.
I guess how big you experience the change is depends of what the initial feeling you got from the band was as you started to listen to their music...and what songs you first fell in love with (which determines the way you feel the band _should_ sound like). I started from AVAAW (with songs: Prophetian, Aurora Borealis, River Flows Frozen) and those were the ETOS for me. The atmosphere and melodies in those felt really special and they had some tranquil moments in them. I totally fell in love with "Sakura No Rei" & "Sinister Rain" on BTBS too, and I felt the same feeling with these as I had listening those AVAAW song back in time. So I wouldn't mind if ETOS kept on doing more of this Sakura No Rei -style too. All of these songs I just mentioned are the types of songs I personally expect ETOS to do more. ...I have to add here that I really like the female vocals in ETOS songs (Nocturnal Strains, Bride Of The Crimson Sea, Sakura No Rei), so more of that too.

So what thoughts does this bring up, and what are the songs you guys feel have the real essence of ETOS in them?
