i'm thinking of getting a couple of savatage AND john oliva's pain albums...

maybe 2 of savatage, and the 3rd of john olivia

since i'm a noob to either bands, would you guys came to recomend me anything?

Jon Oliva's Pain has only released two albums, so good luck trying to find the thrid one

no i mean, that i am thinking of getting 3 albums. the first 2 would be ANY albums released by savatag. and the 3rd album that i will get would be one of john oliva's pain album. doesnt matter which one.

but yeah, which 2 by savatage should i get. and which one from john oliva's pain?

If I were I would go for
Streets: A Rock Opera
and
Gutter Ballet

and Tage Mahal by Jon Oliva's Pain

btw, sorry for the misunderstanding.

I agree there also Hall of the Mountain King, but I was taking Solil's taste in metal into consideration, and then I think Gutter Ballet is a good one to start with as it crosses between the progressive Savatage and the more US power Savatage.

Oh, I see.

"Gutter Ballet" is a superb album, one of my favourites. Strange or not, although everybody loves "Streets" so much, I was never really into it... About Jon Oliva's Pain: the new album is very good too...

I also bought all TBO's a few weeks ago. Great albums but I can't listen to them every day. As a matter of fact the "Christmas" cd are only listenable in only one period of the year. But the albums are great, that's a fact.

Although I do like Streets a lot I prefer Gutter Ballet, that one is stronger IMO, Streets is a bit too cheesy at times and too many ballads and semi-ballads on it and less of the real old Savatage sound to it. But after Jon Oliva left Savatage went downhill a lot i thin and also the loss of Criss Oliva was too big for the band. They became too clinical not en ough feeling anymore without the two Oliva brothers contributing either guitar or vocals.

well...i'm not exactly a big fan of power metal. i either get pissed of, or end up laughing when i listen to power metal simply because of its cheesy-ness....so that puts me back to square one i guess...

i wont mind epic stuff like the likes of Trans-siberian orchestra. i mean, with lots of reverb on their guitar solos, and all. how ever, if its power metal like rhapsody, blind guardian and stuff...then i might reconsider....

No, it doesn't because old Savatage doesn't play cheesy european flowery ladida power metal but the good old US kind which isn't cheesy at all. (i.e. Iced Earth, Vicious Rumours, Helstar, Ravensthorn, etc.)

and as for john oliva's pain. their Tage mahal album got mixed reviews...and their second album, there was only one review, and it was recomended...which is better and why?

wait...doing some research on the guys. chris died before the street album was released. does that mean that there is no contribution from him in that album?(as in he recorded some stuff before his death)? i rather listen to him as well....so best of his album..whatever that may be

I don't know where you got the information but Criss Oliva died AFTER the Streets album was released (Streets was released in 1991 and Criss died in 1993). When Savatage did the Streets tour Criss was definitely on stage I can guarantee you because I saw them three times on that tour. Criss has ALSO recorded Edge of Thorns (that is the last album he was on)

Try to get hold of Ghost In The Ruins: A Tribute to Criss Oliva which is also released as Final Bell in some countries (may Japanese version is caleld Final Bell. This is GREAT live album by Savatage featuring Criss AND John and featuring all their best songs.

my fav 2 songs are hall of the mountain king and edge of thorns,
but just a quick question
ive got two versions of hall of the mountain knig, one has got a three minute intro improvising over the classical version and the other doesn't. which one is corrcet

The instrumental intro which has thze famous Edvard Grieg theme is called Prelude to Madness.. The other song is indeed Hall of the Mounatin King (Madness reeeeeeeeeeeeigns in the hall... of the mountaiiiin kiiiing)
I never had hear there are other vesre of song maybe its radio verse or some live song, because usualy radio songs are shorter how CD stuff

I also ONLY know the version with the Edvard Krieg intro. even live that intro was ALWAYS played on guitar. Maybe the one without is a radio edit version?

well, i read it somewhere that the album 'streets' has a guitar with roses stuck on its fret board. it was suppose to symbolize chris's death. and its on the back cover of the album...unless they rereleased the album and put that in there...

They did rerelease the album. But that guitar with the roses was already on the original cd and symbolized D.T. Jesus (the main character of the Streets concept) or something along those lines.

And yes now that you mention it Jon Oliva does looka bit like the penguin character in the Batman movie.

@ Mega-slayer: dude, i believe Trans-Siberian Orchestra's shirt has that on the front of one of their T-shirts. and on the back, it just says TSO. let me dig up the picture:

umm....ive been digging up some more savatage stuff that is on Youtube. so i guess i've been listening to their singles. and idk, i think i'm liking Zak more on Savatage than on Circle II Circle. and i think i like Jon better on TSO than on Savatage. but either way, the music is really cool. really liking 'jesus saves' and 'one child' and a few others like gutter ballet and 'this is not what we meant' or something like that.

speaking of youtube, you guys heard of the competition? trans-siberian orchestra are holding a contest in which the winner can win a pearl drum set, a korr keyboard, a bass, or a fucking Custom Jackson Guitar!!!!

all what one has to do is record themselves fucking around with an instrument while some of their song is playing in the background, and post that on youtube under the band's name.

that is such a sweet contest!

on the side news...i heard that savatage is breaking up. they will be holding their last concert in about 2008 before they split up.

I don't like Jon Oliva's voice much either, but Savatage is one of my favorite bands. I prefer Zak's voice, and that's a big reason why The Wake of Magellan is my favorite album. They still have the crazy fucking guitar solos they always had, but made the music even more interesting then it ever was. I listen to that album almost every day.

I still like most of their stuff though.

I didn't like Jon Oliva when I first heard them (although Hall of the mountain king was the first song I liked). You kinda like him more and more, especially on Street's but on the newer stuff as well. Zach is killer on all records though I prefer The Wake of Magellan and Dead Winter Dead to the other stuff. Edge of Thorns has some incredible song's though.

Criss co-wrote the song with Jon for the Streets album so it is not about the death of Criss.

EDIT: Oops, misread your question. there it says Christ and not Chris. well, I think it is about the protagonist (D.T. Jesus) in Streets who somehow sees the Light or whatever that is called in X-tian circles and is henceforth saved.

Last months there were a few Savatage reunion rumors, but Jon Oliva publicly denied those rumors of any further Savatage related recording.

Regarding recent Savatage rumors: "There has been some news floating around about a Savatage website update and other things Sava related. I just wanted to clarify that this news is strictly limited to the re-release of the entire Savatage catalog as well as merchandise from prior tours that will be made available soon. But just to be 100% clear there are no plans in the future for any Savatage recordings or shows! JOP is currently hard at work in pre-production for the 4th release, as well as preparing for the Euro-Festivals and South American tours in 2009."

Just listened for one of the first times to Savatage, they play excellent progressive heavy metal, i love their piano-driven songs, especially If I Go Away which features some INTENSE almost black metallish screams by Jon Oliva who is some kind of metal version of Meat Loaf(even fatter than him lol). also another great track by them is Gutter Ballet which is of course yet another great piano-driven track, reminiscent of 70s prog rock like Uriah Heep.

I'm with JohnDoe -Gutter Ballet and Edge of Thorns are excellent albums. Jon's lyrics get increasingly personal and thoughtful with each album, I prefer Savatage's more theatrical and progressive material overall, however Hall of the Mountain King is an undisputed classic.
