I'm suprised this hasn't been made yet...

Founded in 1988, Cryptopsy grew to become one of today's biggest leaders in today's technical death metal scene. Their singer, Lord Worm, is certainly one of the most notable aspects of the band, whose voice sounds almost strained, yet still powerful. Cryptopsy's music is very fast and aggressive, made stronger by their liberal use of time-changes and the intense drumming of Flo Mounier, who gives all of their songs a very prevalent percussive feel. This lineup released two albums, Blasphemy Made Flesh and their groundbreaking album None so Vile.

After 1996, Lord Worm left the band for his own ambitions as a teacher, and was replaced by Mike DiSalvo. His vocal style was very different from that of his predecessor, taking on a more -core style. His first album as singer was Whisper Supremacy. While many people were turned off by this dramatic change, DiSalvo was indeed a very aggressive vocalist. After the release of the band's fourth album, And then You'll Beg... DiSalvo quit in 2001 to pursue a family life.

After a brief stint with Martain Lacroix as vocals (who can be heard on the album None so Live), Lord Worm finally returned as lead singer on Cryptopsy's latest album, Once was Not. The band is now touring Europe to promote the album.

The first Cryptopsy album I heard was And then You'll Beg, and I loved it, so I suppose I like DiSalvo a bit more than some other Cryptopsy fans... of course, I now prefer Lord Worm.

Any other fans?

I think they should get the old vocalist from Kataklysm. His style on Sorcery and Temple of Knowledge would fit Cryptopsy, plus, he's also a crazy motherfucker

Haha that would be amazing! But I read that Cryptopsy are searching for someone who can actually sing as well as growl... and Sylvain can't sing. Although it's a shame that he didn't form another band after he left Kataklysm cos he rules.

Really? That should be interesting then. Looks like they have some interesting plans for the new album.

I'm a little sad about them letting Lord Worm go though...I only have None So Vile and Once Was Not, but I heard songs that he wasn't the vocalist on and it sounded strange.

I reckon Sylvaine's vocals could work extremely well with the bands musicmanship. You can also add the The Mystical Gate Of Reincarnation to that list that would make him a good candidate for this position (if he was actually going for it). Is he doing any projects at the moment?

Ah, and where did you hear/read that information? It sounds very unlikely to me that the band would take this direction since they have been known to but out pretty strong death metal with some 'brutal' elements.

Check this link Xtreme Jax: http://www.metalstorm.ee/events/news_comments.php?news_id=4685

"Cryptopsy is currently looking to audition candidates to fill the positions of singer/frontman and keyboardist/samplist. Vocalists must be able to sing in clean voice, on pitch, and also be able to scream/growl."

Quite aware of this actually. Had an email sent to me from "their people". Still doesnt excuse people for not posting their source of information. Haha, just being a pain, but really.

Still, im not convinced that the band are actually going to incorporate 'singing' into their music. Screams/growls, yes. But dont see how 'singing' is going to gell with the intensity of the bands music. Unless they are actually trying to get a vocalist that can deliever growls that are understandable (Chris Barnes/George Fisher), and moving away from Lord Worms brutal style of growls.

Well, I see it this way: They used a few harmonics and influences from classical and orchestra in Once Was Not. Still, they stayed brutal. Listen to a track like The Frantic Pace of Dying, and hear how the riff they use in the track is synonymous with it being played on a violin or similar string instrument - there's a break towards the end of the track where this happens - and you will hear where they're going. Also, listen to Angelskingarden. In the background, while the lead is being played, you can hear what sounds like choir vocals. It doesn't detract from their brutality...heck, we all know Cryptopsy is brutal as hell, but I think they're emphasizing a clinical, well produced atmosphere that incorporates aspects from other genres. How they managed to do that with some hard and technical drumming, I don't know. But, they are either going to bust some balls with the next album, or its going to turn way too much from what we know.

I just hope they keep their technicality. I don't know many other bands who could top them for their brilliance

@Xtreme Jax - No man, I'm not aware of Sylvain doing anything after he left Kataklysm. Maybe he died or something...

And about the singing, I have no idea how they're going to incorporate clean vocals into their music. It's been a while since I've listened to it, but there's a song on Once Was Not that opens with clean vocals, and I believe it was the single for the album. The song is actually really gay, until it picks up.

The thing that really annoys though is that they're planning on using keyboards on their upcoming release. I really hate most bands that use keyboards, and I hope they don't cheese up their style.

I cant imagine them using very prominant keyboards, I could imagine them using some subtle ones to add to some atmosphere maybe, kind of like what Belphegor does.

I'm interested in the keyboards idea. The Faceless use keyboards and they sound good with their Technical Death style of playing. Just as long as it doesn't suck, I'm cool with anything Cryptopsy does.

Cryptopsy has to be one of the most talanted bands i've ever heard. I've seen Flo Mounier's dvd "Extreme Metal Drumming 101" and after listening to all of the band's albums and having my head cut clean off by Flo's drumming and Lord Worm's growls i can proudly claim to be a fan of Cryptopsy. Somewhere i read about "None So Vile" being a death metal classic - i absolutely encourage everyone who hasn't heard it to listen to it, this simply IS what technical death metal is all about. Their last work - "Once Was Not" is a bit more sample-oriented if i could say so myself, and it's also kickass, with "Endless Cemetery" being my all-time favorite Cryptopsy song. I absolutely love them and i absolutely would sacrifice two of my toes for a new album (plus a third one for a studio video of Flo Mounier performing Endless Cemetery ). Cryptopsy owns \m/

Edit: How long has it been already since they lost Lord Worm? :/ C'mon u guys, someone answer their ad and get the death machine rolling ;]

Seems like None So Vile, and to a lesser extent, Whisper Supremacy and Once Was Not are Cryptopsy's most appreciated albums. But, I am shocked that there is not a greater following for Blasphemy Made Flesh. I put off buying that album for too long, as a result of the many complaints about the production being too quiet and the guitars too low in the mix. If it is too quiet, turn it up. As for the guitars, I think it almost transforms the sound, which is not a bad thing. Personally, I find myself somewhat picky about production and not enjoying many DM albums for that reason...but I actually like this production.

Anyways, I like every single song on this album, although Open Face Surgery, Serial Messiah, Born Headless, and Pathological Frolic are true classics in every sense. The vocals, drums, and bass are all amazing, and it really is rare to find more than one or two band members who really stand out on an album. This is definitely an essential for all death metal fans.

*Edit* Just read the post about Cryptopsy looking for a singer who can have clean vocals, which is a bad sign, considering the interview that Flo Mournier had about putting hip-hop in the next album...

None so Vile is my favorite Death Metal album....probably. If not NsV I would have to go with Suffocation's "Pierced from Within", which also kicks uber ass. None So Vile is fucking incredible. The musicianship in general is phenomenal; especially Jon Levasseur's guitar playing---fucking face-melting. Lord Worm is crazy. I love his vocals. They're...unique.... Worm is a really cool guy as well. I happen to know he never really listens to death metal; he is actually a diehard black metal fan--he's big on Deathspell Omega (which makes me happy!!!!) Cryptopsy's other vocalists sucked ass though. NsV is definately the best album they ever put out....but that's not saying anything against them, since nobody has ever put out such an incredible album!

My favorite songs on NsV are Benedictine Convulsions, Phobophile, Lichmistress and Orgiastic Disembowelment--

Yeah bahaah , that was announced a while ago though, or at least discussed but not confirmed. anyhow, as if Once was not wasnt enough to slam the last nail in their coffin... Theyll probably get some huge scenester support now, do a tour with job for a cowboy and waking the cadaver or something.... great...

What? Once Was Not is one of their best albums, and my personal favorite. They didn't lose any intensity at all, and in fact, I think they just got faster.

But no, I'm really depressed about the thought of him being in the band. Fuck this

Wow, I just checked out the link to that myspace page...that vocalist wont fit in at all, looks like it might be a shitty album after all. I was expecting a predictable/nothing new type album at the worst, but this looks pretty bad.

Im not that huge on cryptopsy or their type of music in general, nevertheless OWN was a borefest for me. I don't care about seed and intensity, needs to be more than that, some of the clean guitar parts were kinda cools though. Anyhow im waiting for the jfac & cryptopsy tour
