So, French Black metal. A very diverse scene, containing both old, 'true' bands and new, innovative ones. I personally think that if you like Black metal, there is no way there is no single French Black metal band that doesn't appeal to you. Whether you love Deathspell Omega's powerhouse, testosterone-fuelled philosophical (awesome) ramblings, Neige's melancholic work with Mortifera (highly underrated) or you're a Les Légions Noires guy, the Frenchies seem to have something for everyone.
In this topic you can discuss the known, big bands or bring new, interesting acts to light. I'd like to start off by saying that Mortifera's "Vastiia Tenebrd Mortifera" (the album that inspired this thread), is highly recommended to anyone that likes his/her Black metal melancholic and sensitive, yet incredibly raw and distorted. A pearl, in my humble opinion.

15.01.2012 - 02:58 Written by RavenKing on 15.01.2012 at 02:49 I was *thinking* the same thing. This isn't the latest Alcest (I'm an Alcestian [@TM Troy Killjoy] myself). My comment was really geared toward 80s sci-fi. It has that throwback feel to me. YMMV. Again, beautiful album.

15.01.2012 - 03:31 Written by RavenKing on 15.01.2012 at 02:49 I have always seen that comment as being useful both as a compliment and as a critique. Depends on the kind of music. Sometimes I like to take a nap with an album in the background. There are many albums that can be relaxing enough to work fine in those moments when you are *just* about to fall asleep but also work when you are fully awake to appreciate the music.

Whoa, he's a bit of a French gem that doesn't seem to have been mentioned yet: Darvulia. Oddly low rating on MS, though has 6 reviews at 87% on MA. Quite original sounding dissonant black metal: This is also a pretty nice demo from last year too:

With Darvulia I'm very close to having a new favourite band! They are right up there with Blut Aus Nord and S.V.E.S.T.

I started off really negative to S.V.E.S.T (I remember us discussing it) but when I started listening to it in head phones where I could hear all the "details" it blow me away completely. I can't wait for a new release by them.

I'm enjoying Belenos a lot since a few weeks. Bought Chemins de Souffrance this week and planning to buy his/their other stuff too if I can find it.

The only French Black Metal band I really like is Nehemah. Probably because it doesn't sound like French BM at all.

I don't really get the whole "doesn't sound French" thing at all because France doesn't have a particular black metal sound whatsoever, they just happen to breed a bunch of excellent and varied bands.

12.05.2012 - 20:12 Written by [user id=4365] on 12.05.2012 at 19:58 I meant that it sounds more like something Scandinavian (kinda like early Darkthrone). Most French bands sound either modern or like total crap, Imo. But that's only my opinion.

Very derivative Darkthrone worship but probably my favourite Darkclone album of all time. Very high quality classic black metal that's underrated in their discography.

To tell the truth, my dislike for French BM bands is not caused by something specific. It's just that it seems there is always something I don't like. Sometimes, it's vocals, sometimes production, sometimes guitars, etc... Since I'm someone who appreciate a song 'for the whole package', if you know what I mean, when there is an element I dislike it is very hard for me to like a band. I mean that the feeling I really get from a song comes from all elements combined. P.S. It has really nothing to do with the country. I have nothing against France. Countries don't matter to me when it comes to music.

As far as I know most of his black metal knowledge relates to the Cascadian movement and some of the more popular acts a la Behemoth (not even black metal anymore) and Darkthrone (also not strictly black metal anymore).
