It's probably been said before, so excuse me if I've resurrected the body of a beaten horse.

Something that's irked me for quite a while now has been the use of the word "Progressive". It isn't exactly the word that bothers me, instead it is the way that it's often use that gives me a sinking feeling.

Progressive - adj, making progress toward better conditions; employing or advocating more enlightened or liberal ideas, new or experimental methods.

Certainly, there have been many bands in metal that have earned the title of a truly progressive band. I don't want to mention names because I'd like to keep the discussion away from squabbling over band genres. But seriously, does anyone else feel we use the word progressive too often? It seems all a band needs to do these days to have 'Prog' put in front of their main genre is add some middle eastern element or set of obscure South American instruments played only by a single tribe in the deepest part of the amazon. It doesn't seem to matter if another band has already done it or not. Once a single band does something progressive, is every band that follows suit also progressive? Or just a bunch of copy cats.

Discuss, I guess. If you want.

Overproduced or polished sound. who gives a fuck if a metal album production is amazing. all i give a fuck about is does the album shredd or is it hardcore.

Overproduced doesn't mean amazing. It means they are trying way too hard and just end up making it all sound plastic. It's when clean production is overdone. And no, it doesn't sound amazing, it sounds fucking shitty and can totally ruin an album if it's bad enough.

I much prefer an organic sound to something that sounds like it could have been done on a computer. Electronic music isn't metal, why should music that might just as well have been electronic be regarded as anything but plastic shit?

Totally agreed. Overproduction is one of the biggest problems with metal nowadays. Many albums don't even sound like metal but like computerized bullshit.

As for the most abused word in metal, I would say "sucks".

Yes, I prefer my metal to be a bit like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mE--ehEUg5I

and not like this:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ywxm6zLEjFY

But that also goes a bit beyond production qualities, even if they do play a part.

I agree, but maybe not as bad as Welcome to Hell. Actually, WtH's lo-fi production quality is grossly exaggerated, in my opinion.

I actually think it fits the album perfectly. But then again, it is IMO one of the best records ever made from one of the best bands ever to have existed.

-i respect your view on it, you make a great case, but to me all that matters is the hardcore metal. if ride the lightning was polished like the black album production, it would be the same amazing album that it is. think about it. the black album was average because half the songs were average ok songs.

What I'm saying is that overproduction can ruin an album. Listen to Bonded by blood by exodus, and then listen to Let There Be Blood to see what I mean. The songs are the same, but it's different takes on them. One is on the rough side, and one is on the highly overpolished side. One is a fucking monster of an album, and the other one is a crapfest. I'll let you decide which one is which.

Not sure about metal, but for music in general the most abused term is "Christian". It's never even made sense to me; how can Christian describe a style of music? It can't. Christianity (and all religion) is a lyrical subject, not a genre. Christian rock, metal, whatever, its just a silly term

Um...yeah, I'm in total 1000% agreement with Marcel on this one...the only way that heavy metal evolves is if every aspect from culture is taken and infiltrated into heavy metal...a lyrical concept will always generate a synthesisa of musicality that can melded into metal...

I find it annoying, indeed. Especially as some people seem to believe everything pseudo-symphonic is pure genius when so many bands nowadays just add a few synth effects to hide that they're basically a mediocre metal band.

Yeah, in this day and age when pretty much everything has been done already, originality is rare. It doesn't mean we can't find great albums anymore but better forget about originality.
Anyway, unoriginality is not a problem as long as quality is there. It's when it falls into genericness that it becomes a problem.

This.

"Repetitive" and "boring" tend to get overused, especially when you want to give a bad review on a genre defining album. Not to say it isn't always warranted, but to say that it seems like kind of a cop out.
"Consistent", yet another word I hate to see. It's just code for "they stopped trying on this album".

I think the worst offender, when it comes to this, is symphonic Powermetal. God some bands take them seriously and believe they belong to some 'higher' category because they use orchestral elements, when they only sound cheesy and contrived.

It should be noted that prog metal very easily becomes pretentious. There are some cases of good proggy metal though. Fates Warning, Queensryche and Savatage have released golden stuff, and this stuff usually avoids the remarks.

Opeth and Dream Theater, on the other hand, deserve all the shit they get.

But yeah, there is also black metal that deserves the tag (Deathspell Omega, I am looking in your general direction).
