Both of these bands have been looked upon as non-flowery powermetal and thus more liked by the extreme metallers than f.e the Finnish powermetal style.
I personally prefer Kamelot because they have more than 30 excellent songs and even though i like a few Iced Earth songs, none of them comes close to the average Kamelot song.
I won't go into detail on what song i like most etc etc, but i just find Kamelot's style better. Melodic, fast, non-generic power ballads and a great vocalist.
I'm waiting to hear from others.

Kamelot...typical power metal? Maybe they used to be a long time ago, but I would hardly call them typical power metal. Thats just my opinion.

My thoughts exactly.

voted for iced earth. Even though i only like a few songs from iced earth (and i mean REALLY like them), i dont like any specific kamelot songs.. i mean i heard them all, but there is none that moves me enough to say i really like them. Just the average thing i guess but still good to hear as a background thing ;P

My vote goes to Iced Earth for some reasons:
The mythical "Alive In Athens" , Jon's participation with Hansi to Demons And Wizards and of course for the great power played by Iced Earth.

I voted for Kamelot. I don't think Iced Earth is Power metal anyway.
And Kemelot is a lot better with more emotional (not emo) songs. Iced Earth sounds more the same for me... same distortion, same music... nothing really special

Vote for Kamelot, more complexe music, more progressive and still very power.

Iced Earth is a good band, i like them (have all albums), but i don't have this thrill when i listen to them as i have with Kamelot.

Let's face it: both bands are quite cheesy at moments. Kamelot are not so far from Rhapsody (which is among the cheesiest bands I know) and Iced Earth sound like Helloween in some tracks, and I consider Helloween as the most cheesy power metal band of all, except maybe Edguy. But Something Wicked 1 and 2 are great albums and I must admit Iced Earth are not as ridiculous as European bands. Somehow their music sounds more masculine and powerful. As for Kamelot, I used to like them a lot, but I can't help feeling embarrassed when I watch the Ghost Opera video, cause the singer looks so fucking ridiculous... So my vote goes for Iced Earth.

Form what I see you are either not very familiar with IE or simply like Kamelot better... But I feel the need to say this :
1. Kamelot come really close to flower power.
2. The only flaw of IE songs is that they all have a similar structure other than that I find no song below a 8 on a scale of 10
3. Singing-wise Matt Barlow is one of the most unique and talented vocalist in the metal scene nowadays. (I must admit I don't really find the Ripper fitting for this band)
4. IE's ballads are quite melancholic and easy to relate to making them a very powerful part of their music.

I also like Kamelot just needed to say why in my opinin Iced Earth are better... For me in all these categories Iced Earth outdo Kamelot.

0) I was familiar with Iced Earth, I simply like Kamelot more, although the statement that "not even good Iced Earth songs come close to average Kamelot songs" was stupid.
1) Keyboard use doesn't make them seem like your average power metal band imo. Now more progressive than flower. Well, the statement of "non flowery" came from my friend who is a huge death metal fan, but still likes Kamelot for reasons he can't justify. And Iced Earth he thought was more darker than the normal power band, even so much to be a different genre.
2) Matter of opinion. Appreciated, yet not agreed.
3) Again a matter of opinion (though I dunno why I point this out...everything is about opinion). I don't know much about technicalities and the sort, but Kahn seems to have a better range, more emotion and better melody for my ears.
4) I sort of remember hearing some in the back of my head.

I can see your point Kamelot are really far away form an average power metal band yet they lack the raw sound of brutal force Iced Earth poses, however Kamelot are fit for a wide range of styles and Kahn really has a great voice filled with emotion, whereas Barlow emphasizes on other aspects of singing, nevertheless if you listen to some of Iced Earth's ballads you'd find his capable of singing in a touching way, at least for me because it is easy for me to relate to their ballads.
