I couldn't help noticed there wasn't a thread for Sonata yet. They're one of my favourite bands, and I just got their new live DVD today. Watched it, and loved it! I have all the albums as well, with my fave's being Ecliptica and Reckoning Night. Winterheart's Guild is good, but for me, Silence just lacks the magic of the other albums. I know a lot of Sonata fans will argue that Silence is their best and all that shit, but I fail to see what you lot see in it. I'm not saying it's bad, just not their best

@ Daru Jericho Are you kidding me! Have you seen my pics? There´s no chance I could get in those clubs, as I look like twelve year old... But the good side is that I can still travel with children´s ticket in train and bus, although I´ve been 17 for almost a year now.

That's no excuse! I've been to 18+ gigs and gotten there with a child ticket haha. I did it when I was 16 too A lot of people say I have a 'baby face' too but I think when you go to most gigs, the people taking the tickets are just too busy trying to get everyone inside that they don't feel they have the time to examine everyone lol.

@ Daru Jericho Well, this happened a couple of years ago...we were in a restaurant with my sister and two friends and the waiter asked if we all were already over 5 years old... And everyone always thinks that my sister is older than me, although I´m 4 years older than she. But I get into our student parties although they technically are +18. Maybe if I was with a big group of my friends who are already 18, I would get in some club... Luckily the festivals where Sonata Arctica plays have no age limits.

@ The Alchemist The concert was in Helsinki, at the Tuska festival. I´ll see them another time this summer, when they play in Ankkarock, in the beginning of August. I hope they play Shamandalie then, as they didn´t play it yesterday. And yes, I´m lucky, but my chances to see Sonata Arctica live aren´t always better than your´s, as they tour around the world most of the year or then they play in some clubs, where I can´t get in, as I´m not 18 yet. But this year I´m lucky. Let´s hope they´ll come to Colombia some day...

Yes, an excellent band like Sonata Arctica, tour the whole year, but I don't know why they haven't came here yet, since the metal scene in Colombia is so good, but I'm sure that some day they will come here
And as for the age to get in clubs, I'm in the same situation, but fortunately this year we'll be 18

Haha, yeah next time Sonata play at an 18+ club go with a group of people who are over 18 and you probably are more likely to get in. It would be worth it for Sonata.

I don't really know why I like so much the live songs on "Successor"... they're technically horrible, with misplaced kwyboaards and an amateur voice, but I just love them... the version of "Letter To Dana" and "My Land" are IMO far more enjoyable than the originals.

Well, out for you colombians and obviously myself, during the Dream Theater concert turns out my uncle is friend with the guy that brought them and apparently they had several bands in their "wanted" list, including Sonata, and guess what, Children of Bodom Now, it´s not 100% sure, but hey! who knows So, let´s hope they can manage to bring at least one of them. I wouldn´t complain at all

Whoa! Let's hope Sonata come soon to Colombia. I will be there. I have the albums. I was quite lucky, actually, when I bought Reckoning Night, 'cause I found a special edition wth three bonus tracks. Quite interesting, they make a cover of Depeche Mode's "World in your Eyes". It's great. And it's my favourite album.

@Tulkas: if it's true what you say man, I'll be there, let's hope you're right, and both bands come.

That´s my favorite album also, too bad mine didn´t have the bonus tracks And as I said, it´s not a 100% sure they come, they´re just on some kind of 'wanted' list. But at least that´s something, and that tells us that at least they´re trying to bring them, so let´s hope they can pull it off and that they´re able to convince them to come.

I agree with you all dudes, sonata arctica is one of the gratest "new" groups in the gender of power metal. I really liked the live DVD and the reckoning night album but i've listen to almost all fo their material and most of their songs are great ( with great sense of what power metal is and should be ). With no more words to express the greatness of this group, i finish my post.

I saw Sonata Arctica at Ankkarock last Saturday and they played a good gig, once again. I think they were even better than in Tuska. The set was pretty much the same, so not many surprises. This time Tony´s voice was better, as he didn´t have a sore throat. But the atmosphere in the audience was better in Tuska, as there were none of those teenage blondes who just like the band because Tony looks good...

I noticed Jani had gained weight just by watching the "For the Sake of Revenge" DVD. Sadly, I haven't seen them live though.

I could have sworn I posted in here but I guess I didn't.Well anyways Sonata is a band that I myself personally like. I have all of their albums, except "For the sake of Revenge" but I have seen it and listened to it thanks to a friend. My favorite album is probably Silence, and my favorite song is tied between "Draw Me" and "Full Moon"

Ah, Sonata Arctica. This band has become the soundtrack to our college. Here at Montreat, we have a very small group of people who listen to Metal, maybe less than 10 people. But this past year, Sonata came to Atlanta, GA to place and my buddy Jim and I decided to see how many people we could get to go. In the fall we managed to get 8 people to go see Opeth & Nevermore with us. But they were all fans of the type of music. This was going to be different. So we started playing "Full Moon", "My Land" "Victoria's Secret" and other songs and began to sing along with them. I swear, "Full Moon" is the most contagious song ever. So we got like 20 people to head down with us, some of who had never heard metal in their life.

So, anyway, at any give point in the day you can sing out "She should not lock the open door", and you will have no less than 5 people cry out "Run Away, Run Away, Run Away!"

@Hemlock: Really interesting, I think that Sonata Arctica has something that few bands have: their music can be appreciated by people who don't know many metal bands or even don't know metal. I think that this is the reason of their popularity

I agree. I have a couple of friends who aren't exactly "metalheads" that really like Sonata Arctica. A good "gateway" band I think too.

Reckoning night and Winterheart's guild are the best albums of Sonata in my opinion, though a lot of fans prefer Silence or Ecliptica.
Even if it's a power metal band (I wouldn't describe it this way myself) I love their ballads: Tallulah, Shamandalie, Letter to Dana... and also Gravenimage, The end of this chapter, Victoria's secret, Ain't your fairytale... chilling lyrics and excellent music... it's obvious that it's my favourite band! ^^'

Definitely true. I know a lot of people who aren't into metal who listen to them and whoever said they're a gateway band, I also agree with them. A lot of metalheads I have talked to said that Sonata were one of the first metal bands they checked out. I wish they were one of my first...They're uber catchy and I think that's what appeals to a lot of people and makes them remember the music.

I can't begin to put this band into words... Sonata Arctica is perhaps easily my favoriteb and of all time... or at least they've been the most played band in my ipod for quite some number of months now.

I'm actually not that big a fan of their ECLIPTICA album - but I do enjoy the song "Replica" quite a bit off of it. I'm not quite sure though why so many people consider this to be their best album... I find the choruses on this album to be pretty weak compared to their other works.

I'd have to say my favorite SA album is WINTERHEART'S GUILD... simply b/c of the diversity on it and because there is no one weak track on this album.
SILENCE is also great, but it lacks the diversity that many say it has... basically there are too many fast paced tracks on this album, not that I mind them, but it just gets to be too much after awhile.

RECKONING NIGHT is definitely very unique compared to their other albums, which is nice and all, but it lacked the number of ballads that Silence and Winterheart's Guild had... in fact the only true ballad on the whole album was "Shamandalie"... I'm really hoping that their next album (due out early 2007 i believe) will contain more ballads... since they are by far the best SA songs that there are!

Soliloquy
i dont see the huge hype about this band. i'm sorry, but i really cant. a few of my friends hate me for not liking this band. and in the university i just started going to, majority of metalheads are supporting this band, or dimmu borgir with their t-shirt. dimmu borgir, okay, not a big fan of their music either. but that i can sort of like. this band on the other hand, idk. i can just not find anything special about thier music. i'm not saying that dimmu borgir is the comparable to this band. but out of popularity.

reasons why i cant see anything special in their music is the same basics that go into all power metal:- fast drums that are just...fast. masturbatory guitarists. their vocals being high. them having an overly produced synth/keys. most of their guitar solos are just there for the sake of being their. same goes for their key solos. cant say much about their lyrics.

but i tried, and i tried hard. this band i just cant seem to like. i've heard all their albums, except for their eps, Reckoning Night, and Successor. and i still cant get into em. i dont really see any thing new this band is really offering me.
