Spent a few hours now on Darkest Dungeon. etc

Hahaha and I just opened this thread to post something about Darkest Dungeon... seems like it's quite unbalanced from what you say. As I am not interested at all in trying "early access" games, I'll patiently wait until they balance it up. I really have high hopes for it too.

In other news, Ultima Underworld 2's official sequel is getting a kickstarter as I write this... *cries*

I thought it would be the best just to buy one game this time -- being a tunnel brainer -- and it was Tyranny. I'm not totally liking it, besides the similarities to Pillars of Eternity, I don't really find much good things to say about. The game feels pretty limited with character creation; and with other stuff too, like the locations seem too small and there is very little to interact with, like a lack of characters. Somebody wrote on steam reviews that game appears like half unfinished, and I pretty much agree with that statement. I prefer Pillars of Eternity and Torment Tides of Numenera to this.

The game gives me the impression that there might be some interesting developments when you proceed further and see how the relations to the characters and factions will result -- maybe that is even the whole point of the game. Let's find out !

Still playing Rugby League 2, that came out in 2005. Since I can't use controllers, I haven't played any more recent ones.

Currently trying to get all achievements in Hotline Miami 2, which is basically torture. I'm only missing a few A+ ratings and the 50 000 kills to finally get there but those Richter missions are so absurdly hard to get a good rating in, you need to full combo the whole level.
I love this game so much

So what did you think about it, in the end? I think you'd need to play the game several times and make different decisions to get a sense of the scope of the game as intended, however, I didn't exactly find myself wanting to replay it after one playthrough. The concept of "having to play" as an evil character was interesting, but it feels like maybe a bit too much of the game was walled off behind decision-making. A more recent game by Obsidian, Pentiment, did this a lot better, I think, with there being no right or wrong results, but the story and what actually happened and happens in the story being shaped by what you decide to think happened, while one playthrough still contains the same areas and missions as the next. If you like Tides Of Numenera, you should give Planescape: Torment a shot. It's old, but was made by Obsidian back when they were named Black Isle, and Tides is a tribute to that game. It's an exceptionally well-written RPG with an unforgettable story and characters and setting. For another, more moden, story-focused RPG (also a tribute to Torment), might want to try Disco Elysium.

I'm currently on a new game of Cyberpunk 2077 since I read a lot of good reviews on the DLC "Phantom Liberty", however I have to get through the looong and slooow early game to reach this content. They've revamped the entire skill system and added a lot of new gameplay functionality though, so that's been quite fun to discover. It was a bit awkward and choppy of a game, with bad AI, originally, but feels like much smoother gameplay that better rewards each type of character build more equally. In the original, stealth with hacking was way easier than being combat-oriented, but there's a lot of new tricks you can do in combat now if you build that way. We'll see if the DLC is as good as they say, I've yet to reach it...

TBH I felt like I was kind of finished with the game before finishing the game, if you know what I mean, I wasn't totally caring about it nearing the end. Still I played it until the end and I wasn't much disappointed with it. To me it felt like EITHER: 1) the decisions had been made already earlier in the game, or 2) It didn't make a big difference what you did at all and the results wouldn't be much different. I checked a couple of the endings by loading from save, but I wouldn't replay the game at least on the second hardest difficulty on combat again, it would be better to see from youtube a different ending. Overall I think the game is quite good for atleast sale price. I don't think the combat mechanics are bad like some people wrote and it's good that it's not the same as Pillars of Eternity, reduced party size, shared abilities, and the spell crafting was really good aspects. But this comes from the second hardest difficulty setting, I didn't try other options.

I have finished Torment twice, first in early 2000s when I got in to role playing games after Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale and Fallout 2. Then I played the enhanced edition just recently. I wrote about the game in the Top 10 video games thread with some of my gaming history, but I can't find the thread anymore so I suppose it's deleted. I didn't put Torment in the top 10 games, because the game being so early it had some limitations in the combat, some other issues like crashes and some unfinished-ness -- like if you know the game some things don't make sense i.e getting the tomb plans way AFTER being in the tomb and so missing on that detail.

Latest I have been playing PoE 2: Deadfire and Jagged Alliance 3. And these games have restored my interest in gaming, especially JA 3 being so true to JA 2 and making it better, the turn based combat is a blast and the goofiness of the characters and the humour is there. Let's hope there will be Wasteland 4 and Icewind Dale 3 (I didn't play Baldur's gate 3 yet)

It ends as it began. After Bloodborne, I picked up Dark Souls and spent most the game my first play through hiding behind a shield, poking poking poking my enemies to death with a spear.

Had a great time with Elden Ring and SOTE expansion, but for that final fight, heaviest armor I had, hiding behind the biggest shield I had, poking poking poking with Mohg's Spear. Adios, Radahn, again.

Jesus, that last boss...incredible DLC overall though!

I'm dreading to start the dlc. Finaly gave the basegame a chance and I've done every boss so far but got stuck on Malenia, so I'm taking a break from it for now. I'm been told that the dlc is way harder, so I guess it will take some time before I try it out, haha!

It's tough but Mimic Tear and Rivers of Blood can be a good backup if you're struggling to solo bosses on the first playthrough (this is what I did). An incredible game and DLC overall.

It's a fun game for sure, despite (or perhaps beacuse of) it's difficulty spikes. I'm a bit conflicted of the choice fromsoftware to make the game open world though as I kind of miss the more linear approach of the older titles and the potiental for world building it had. Then again, given how much it feels like a sucessor of the dark souls games, It's difficult to imagine how they could have taken a different road and still feel fresh.

So, which is best of all these souls-like ? Elden Ring ?

This varies from person to person. My ranking would be:
1. Elden Ring - An incredible mix of exploration, lore and bosses.
2. Bloodborne - Highly atmospheric Lovecraftian horror with some amazing level design and bosses (especially in the DLC).
3. Dark Souls 3 - Not the most interesting exploration but definitely the best boss line-up of all the games (especially in the DLCs).
4. Dark Souls 1 - A bit clunkier than DS3, but the exploration and highly-atmospheric interconnected world make it a real gem. It falls off a bit in the second half, but the first half is more than enough to make it a masterpiece.
5. Sekiro - Some of the best combat in any game I've ever played. This one is a little different to the other games but has some incredible bosses.
6. Dark Souls 2 - I would play this after all the others. It's clunky and a bit uninspired in it's level and boss design, but still a good game.

I've yet to play Demon's Souls.

Seems indeed Elden Ring gets the first place. As I don't think I can put hours into many souls like, might be just in one game, probaably Elden Ring then. I tried DS3 with a keyboard and felt clanky (my fault), so I never properly played a souls like, then again I am not sure I can put the focus required...

The focus I spent on Doom Eternal in 2020 pretty much taught me a good lesson that my nerves are better off being preserved lol.
