It actually bothers me a lot that this album is considered not only good but also a classic by a lot of power metal fans. It might have been influent, although I don't really want to believe that, but it sure isn't good. I have never really liked Hammerfall - nowadays they are very good at writing catchy songs even if they're often quite boring, but on 'Glory To The Brave' the attempt to be catchy fails quite hard.

Damn, what was it with this band that had so much power.. this whole album is a bit immature at some points but there is this certain raw emotion that simply is not present on Threshold or Infected. the greatest track imo on this album is the title track, definitely a very emotional song and with the best lyrics they ever wrote. (though this isn't saying much )

A metal heart is hard to tear apart.

My favorite song is probably "Stone Cold".
I don't listen to this kind of metal nowadays but yes, it's good Powermetal and much better than anything they released in the last decade.

They say we'll be your friends we'll stick with you till the end
But everybody's only looking out for themselves
And you say who can you trust I'll tell you nobody

I used to listen to this band while playing computer games. I remember "Stone Cold" came up and it was the first ever Hammerfall song I've heard, and thought it was ridiculous.. "these streets were once my home" was the one lyric that baffled me the most.. so here's a power metal song.. about hobos?

I'm not sure what I was actually expecting from this, but what I've decided is that it's really just an average power metal album-even if it is supposedly one of the band's best. There's a few great tunes here-"The Dragon Lies Bleeding", "The Metal Age" to name a couple-but then the second half takes a creative nosedive and creates a lot of monotony-"Stone Cold" being by far the most tiresome effort of the record. I guess if you're a devoted power metal fan this is probably great, but for everyone else it's a pretty bad starting point.

As always opening album of every PM band are a bit heavier, same here but this was nothing special IMO , just an album, but few songs were good, somehow I think band did jot knew what they want, just went and do something as teenagers do

The album does "sound" kind of promising when you take in consideration the involvement of the ex-Inflames members. I'll admit I came to know Hammerfall from the background of being an In Flames fan, when they still sounded In Flames, not the New In Flames. I don't hear that much the influence though, maybe something in the guitars but not much else. I find the first three songs good, "Steel Meets Steel" stands out as well and having the Warlord cover seems quite justifieable as the band does it well. Not a huge fan of all the songs, hence the rating.

As a side note "The Dragon Lies Bleeding" must be one of the first power metal songs that I heard, I believe it was in the early 2000s on the Metalstorm radio, if I'm not mistaken

I suppose this was highly influential, but man is it boring... Sounds dated and plodding, the only one I really like here is Glory to the Brave and the cover Ravenlord

I think you are wasting your time with this kind of music then if you only find these two songs good, IMO the title song is the boring one here, typical flower ballad Not a highly good album by any means, but some of the songs aren't to shabby.

Nah, I like the next albums better, I find the songs boring in this album, not the style of music that Hammerfall plays. I like other songs here, Dragon Lies Bleeding and Stone Cold, but they barely make the mark above boring or average for me.

A great debut. Not difficult to figure out why they were among the leading bands reviving metal in the late 90's. It's basically USPM with clean vocals. The riffs here are stellar, the songs are easily recognisable and the two chosen covers are excellent additions among the other tracks.

There are no symphonic arrangements or vocal harmonies here. No neoclassical solos and complex structures. It's just a very simple Power Metal, but damn, it is SO GOOD! Besides two okay ballads - I love everything else so much, especially "The Dragon Lies Bleeding", "HammerFall", "Unchained" and "Steel Meets Steel". Not a masterpiece, but a super awesome debut!

I don't listen power metal nowadays but this is a notable exception.
once in a blue moon I'll dust off my vinyl copy and enjoy classics like The Metal Age or Stone Cold.
takes me back 20 years.
