It's official, ...And Oceans are well and truly back on the metal map now, with their second release in 21 years ,As in Gardens, So in Tombs, a more than ideal album for fans that want a trip down memory lane to reminisce the glory days of 90s symphonic and melodic black metal.

I didn't know this band before 2020 album but I tried the older stuff then and didn't really care for it to be honest. Cosmic World Mother was good and this new album might be better. I think this is more melodic black but the few symphonic parts sound great. Standout songs for me was more melancholic Likt Törnen Genom Kött and symphonic Inverse Magnification Matrix.

Cosmic World Mother was an unexpected and extremely pleasant surprise. One of the best albums of that year. This one, I would say is at least on par with that one, if not even better.

Good stuff indeed.

Reminds me of Azarath's Blasphemer's Maledictions... I think it's the same artist. Zbigniew M.Bielak?

I have to agree about the cover art, it's fantastic, music wise it's pretty good too but it doesn't blow me away, despite having some excellent symphonic moments. The last track stands out for me the most.

Definitely some nice artwork. Paz brings up a good comparison with Blasphemers' Maledictions but my mind first went to The Desanctification and The Feral Wisdom. I think that has a lot more to due with the color scheme than anything though.

As for the music, I think this is a small step up from Cosmic World Mother, but still not anything amazing. I just don't feel wowed by anything I'm hearing.

The artist who did the artwork is actually Adrien Bousson.

Love his work with The Algorithm and many others.

Could be my AOTY. Kind of annoyed that it released so early in the year and won my heart so fast. Loved this album to death. The third and the fourth tracks are some of the best in the business so far. Also this album feels more like a melodeath album than meloblack.

I feel like the people who have held this album in high regard have never listened to symphonic black metal before (of course they have, which makes it even stranger). It's such a bland, uninteresting jumbled heap of mediocrity.
Every track on this album sounds the same. A 6 is way too generous for it.

I picked up this album because "Hey, Finntroll's vocalist." This is my first time listening to the band but it ended up sounding a lot more familiar than I expected.

For the first few songs I can't help (wrongly) thinking "This is basically a less overtly folky Finntroll album," because a lot of the keyboard and guitar parts sound like they came from that same realm and the amount of energy matches too. That's selling the album a little short though since songs like Wine Into Water and The Earth Canvas certainly have other more contemplative things going on. There are lots of cool atmospheres and ideas here which are all thoroughly solid and quite enjoyable.
