Ya, its good. Ephemeral is the only song and the rest are kind of ambient pieces but they are all well done. good boy, Insomnium.

A great EP. Ephemeral sounds better than most of what was on One For Sorrow to me.

No, four separate tracks.
Is it pieces taken off each of the 4 tracks? I mean, fuck, this is really short, even for them.

Ephemeral is essentially the lead promotional track preceding their fifth full-length album coming out early next year. The other three tracks are acoustic, fully instrumental pieces that sound like discarded candidates for an album intro track.

I've only heard the title track so far, but damn. It is a song worthy of even Above the Weeping World.

Nice song, finally listening. I think the vocals have been refined a bit. I really couldn't stand the brutish style of this guy, just sounds too unintelligent. Yet I do like Omnium Gatherum, so I guess It's just an odd thing I have against Insomnium.

I was originally skeptical of this release, didn't do much for me at all. Honestly I was hoping for more Omnium influence, what with the new guitarist and all.
But this has grown on me very quickly.
Production seems a bit muted though.

I think this is the first EP I might be persuaded to buy. I've always wanted them to do an album that sounds like the stuff they use for their intro tracks, but an EP's good enough too. The title track is, although not much of a step, the most daring step they've ever made from the style they've stuck with thus far (but still good) and the rest is pure mellow goodness from the band whom I think do the best intros/interludes around. Overall, a really interesting EP. Sure beats the "lead single plus a substandard album bonus track that you'll probably end up getting anyway" formula I so often see.
Aww, it's digital only...

About time Insomnium released something good.
You must be kidding This bland compared what Insomnium usually writes

No kidding. They seem to have lost their spark in the past couple of years. Not sure what needs to be done to return to form. I'm guessing it's challenging trying to stay motivated by writing melodic death metal these days too. I wouldn't be surprised if these guys kind of fade alongside Omnium Gatherum and other similar bands in the next few years.

I certainly hope not However, I think melodeath is here to stay for quite a while as a result of its digestibility, but we'll see

Well I liked the last 3 pieces to the EP and I find their Melodeath highly overrated...much like most melodeath.
Riiiight....overrated in what sense? As in the musicianship is bad or you don't find it enjoyable?

Written by [user id=142921] on 21.12.2013 at 03:28 I don't find it enjoyable cause I think it's shit. No real spark in their albums. Completely monotonous if you ask me. They're like the Skyrim of music. There's a small amount of melodeath out there that I like.
You gave a 10 to Empyrium's Songs, which is far more monotonous than anything this band has ever written so it must just be that you don't like the style or these types of melodies

They hardly sound alike Perhaps the title track of this EP sounds a bit like Omnium towards the end, but that's what happens when you adopt another band's guitarist

Written by [user id=142921] on 21.12.2013 at 15:08 well I like Persefone's Core and Amorphis' TFTTL :3.... and cause it seems relevant I think Amon Amarth is also pretty average. Omnium Gatherum's latest album did nothing for me too....and Be'lakor would be much better if they produced the same quality that they did with 'Countless Skies'.
I was just trying to point out that Insomnium isn't exactly a very good example of a monotonous band. I mean, every song follows a set structure, but they pull it off really well without two songs sounding the same
Although, Persefone and TFtTL-era Amorphis aren't really comparable to this sort of melodeath. Also, I think Be'lakor has pulled off every song they've ever written with near-equal finesse, so I guess we're in disagreement there. Meh, whatever, I guess we just disagree over melodeath in general, forget I brought this discussion up

Just out of curiousity, what's your fav melodeath song? Better yet, maybe top 3 if that exists?

ehhhhh I love Countless Skies by Be'lakor so that's probs in the top 3 somewhere. Add in one of Core's songs and one from TFTTL (I haven't paid attention to the song names for those albums)
Strange taste compared to typical melodeath choices

What is there not to like? On this EP there are three superb acoustic instrumental songs with addition of a regular Melodic DM ``Ephemeral``heavy track! I guess it is not metal enough for some
