I use a very simple Behringer heavy metal pedal, so I wouldn't be of any help

My brother was using a Digitech hardwire tl-2 "metal distortion" pedal for a while but he just got a new half stack setup so he doesn't need it anymore. But, he was using it through his bass amp, which is not a good idea... lol. The bass amp itsself had no distortion and it sounded killer with the pedal. It can go very midrange if you want and overrall its brutal as fuck. I also tried it through my amp, which is a regular guitar amp and cab and it sounded really good too. And......the reason I'm telling you all this is because my brother is trying to sell it now because he has no use for it anymore. If you're interested at all let me know and I'll pm you a price. Its still is prime condition too. (It would be anywhere from $50-$100)

You only need one pedal and that's a Boss MT-2 Metal Zone! It's my favorite, I have 4 of them in case they stop making it

In my own experience, there is only one distortion pedal and then there's the rest of the bunch: Marshall Jackhammer. half the size and half the price of the Boss MT2, this is a goddamned beast of a pedal. The gain on it would not probably work for everyone's idea of extreme metal, but this shit deserves statues built for it. and fuck those crooks over at BOSS and their overpriced pedals! :p

I have a Big Muff Pi, Tube Screamer, Boss Metal Zone, Fuzz Face (red), and Boss DS-1 I use them all for different applications and different combinations depending on what brand I am playing. You can get some seriously SICK buzzsaw black metal riffs done with a DS-1 going through a Tube Screamer or Big Muff. It's just insane how much distortion and sweet hiss comes out of that set up.

Ibanez smashbox is a good way to go. its relatively cheap, has a lot of kicking room, only downside is it eats 9V's like candy!! so if ya get that, i suggest getting a power supply too!!
