2001 was just about to become history when I received this cd in the mail. It was three days before 2002 and I found myself on an airplane home to spend the New Year. The plane had just taxied off the runway as I placed Ensiferum's debut self-titled album in my cd player. I had not heard much about this young Finnish band before I had ordered the CD but was told, since I like Moonsorrow and Finntroll, I would eat this cd up for breakfast lunch and dinner. Well, I am still eating it and it sounds better every fucking time.

My first experience with growls started by chance when I was searching amazon for new metal and I discovered the genre of viking metal. This immediately caught my attention and I read several bands with special interest the reviews on Ensiferum, which obviously had some good debut album released in 2001. Then I searched other sources for this band because amazon did not have it available so I got me a copy via eBay. Of a three cd order this was the first one I listened to and I was shocked, because yet I had not come across growls that have a quite aggressive impact on the ear when you hear them for the first time, but the winds from the north a blowing fortunately strong, below I will tell you why:

The first half of this album sounds like the greatest hits compilation and the second one is just very good. The quality of songwriting here is just ridiculously high! "Token Of Time", "Guardians Of Fate", "Old Man", "Treacherous Gods", "Hero In A Dream" - all these songs are 10/10 super memorable and energetic battle anthems! Truly outstanding work.

Fantasy Metal Project is worth listening to for fans of the first 2 Ensiferum albums. Demos recorded around the same time I believe:

Hi. i invented a brand new genre for this type of "music", called SantaClaus, because the only thing they do is just bang on some random instruments in random order and then also yell "ho-ho" on top of it

This album was one of those that got me into metal back in my early teens, and I still consider it one of the best of all time. I never grow tired of this one.

I think this was the third metal album that I listened to long ago when I was getting into the genre. I had started with Finntroll and wanted to try out another folk metal band and I sure am glad a friend gave me this. I loved it from the first listen and although I don't return to it very often these days I don't think that love has dwindled much at all. It pretty much single handedly made me start learning to play guitar. This album is all killer, no filler and it is one of those landmark albums that influenced countless other bands from a time when folk metal was really starting to take off and I'm sure still does even today. There's lots of variety in the writing, tons of memorable catchy moments, a seemingly endless amount of talent on display, plus a hell of a lot of atmosphere and emotional involvement. What more could we ask for? I honestly don't think there was ever a chance that they could top this album (though Jari sure did try).

My liking of Ensiferum's other albums has soured a bit over time and I haven't wanted anything to do with the band for a decade but after all these years their debut still rightfully deserves its spot in my top 10 favorite albums.
