Dan Swanö returns with his dreadful crimson queen, and of course, Edge Of Sanity , don't think this is a Edge Of Sanity reunion, because is not, no past members are involved in this project, and practically all instruments and vocals duties are handled by Mr. Swanö.
This time the setting is a little less wider, is a convent, were a nun reads the unholy book that can freed the evil queen from her sleep, and once again, make the world bow to her.

A masterpiece again. I prefer the first concept, with 1 unique song, than 45 songs over, but this is still really great !

In fact, not many people really owned Crimson II, as they thought Crimson I has reached the peak and Crimson II was just another commercial option. Wrong to the core, Crimson II is The Best Edge of Sanity's studio album. Crimson II rectified all the weaknesses, omissions and mistakes in Crimson I.

I don't know anyone who thinks Crimson II was a "commercial option."

As for correcting the weaknesses, omissions and mistakes of "Crimson I" I tend not to agree there. This is clearly a more keyboard driven album (the lack thereof in "I" should never be regarded as an omission or a mistake if you ask me) and as excellent as this is it doesn't quite live up to a unified entity like "I" was.

What's wrong with using keyboard ? I think listening these two albums by analysing the distributions of instruments are not quite right. After all music has to be listening by heart.

Point 1 - Crimson I is a bit harse to me, the harseness is not Immortal kind of harshness, but not that comfortable kind of harshness.
Point 2 - Crimson I has a lot of "waiting slots", I expected something good happened, but I have to wait for quite a while to realize that....it bored me a lot.

May be Swano was using keyboard to rectify these two mistakes (my own opinions), I really find this album smoother. Slightly Avantgarde does no harm to the Death genre. Samael's Passage is a good example.

Yep, while this isn't as good as Crimson, it remains an incredible album. Brilliant stuff.

I think this is just as good as Crimson I personally. I love how both albums really seem to compliment each other, listening to the more doomy, murky, and dank first album, then going into the more melodic and upbeat successor, which still has haunting and gloomy moments of its own. If I had to nitpick, the sound of the drums seems a bit flimsy compared to those on the first (I heard they were electronic or something), and the production doesn't sound as organic. Also, I personally would have preferred it if this was just one huge track like the first and not just a bunch of little interlude pieces (never been a fan of that kind of structure), the first one flowed more smoothly that way. Regardless of that though, this is still a masterpiece.

I don't think it's even in the same league as Crimson. It has parts that could rival the first, but then most other parts can't, and it all feels disjointed and lacks flow.

FIRST ONE HAS FLOW?!? M9 you need a good sense filled smack across the noggin from a trve Pearl of Wisdom.

Wow. "Random and nonsensical" is a bit extreme even for this album. I wonder what he thinks of stuff like Unexpect.

What I like most in this album is the way they mixed and reproduced the crimson I melodies. Nothing less from the best producer in our music. Around the middle of the track there are some great, well-structured standalone melodies. But of course it cannot be compared to the first crimson, I can't understand how people even rate this as better. In my opinion crimson II is just the conclusion of Crismon.

What's wrong with using keyboard ?

Keyboards in extreme metal are fine when used to subtly enhance the atmosphere and/or compliment the guitars/riffs, but they should never dominate the soundscape IMO. A few piano/synth solos here or there can work fine too, but when the music is drowned in synths it's just... "unmetal" imo.

That said, I enjoy Crimson II almost as much as the first one, great album and Dan of course is The Man, a true Mastermind.

When I first listened to this album about 6 months ago, I didn't think it was as good as Crimson I.
But now I've revisited some songs here and I'm astounded - so epic, melodic, and intense! Dan Swanö is a genius!
My favorite track (and one of the best songs of all time) is III - Passage of Time

Yeah this, the first Crimson, and Moontower are the best of Dan Swanö's works. And those three are probably my favorite prog albums ever
The intricate melodies, the crazy riffs, the powerful growls, the occasional angelic vocals... Dan the Man never stops astounding me with his genius

I remember reading somewhere maybe a decade ago that Dan Swanö was planning third Crimson album, but after that it's been mostly just silent. I wonder if he's already given up and let it go, since the hype alone would be so astronomical he could never deliver the masterpiece everyone wants.

Not as strong as the first Crimson but still a great melodic prog death album. Impressive to learn that Swano wrote, recorded and produced pretty much all of it by himself (albeit with some guest features)!

Honestly, I listen to albums like this for the plot as well as the music, but it's a bit hard to follow with some of the vocals here. Crimson 1 had much more clarity, and while the vocals here are great, I feel like they could benefit from being a bit less harsh.

So I just heard the new remix and boy the old stuff sound better in every way...but... but... Swano said that some of the original parts were missing, so he asked bunch of people to re-record those parts aaaand.... again but... For my taste they took too much liberty and didnt follow the original. Like in the second guitar solo in the last part, which was sooo epic in the original. Now i always grind my teeth and suffer through it, it issuch a shame

I’m genuinely surprised by the high rating. I was so disappointed by this when I first heard it. Such a flimsy and weak record compared to its untouchable predecessor.
