What happens when you take the mighty talents of Ronnie James Dio, Ritchie Blackmore, and Cozy, and put them together in the same band? You get one of, if not the greatest album of all time. After leaving Deep Purple in 1974, and forming Rainbow, Ritchie Blackmore was making his name a force to be reckoned with. One year later, Rainbow released their debut album, Ritchie Blackmore's Rainbow. After scoring a minor hit with "Man on the Silver Mountain,", Ritchie and Ronnie decided it was time to step up their game. In 1976, after bringing in Cozy Powell on drums, Tony Carey on keyboards, and Jimmy Bain on bass, Rainbow recorded their masterpiece.

"Do You Close Your Eyes" is weak - but at least it's short!

I wouldnt call it weak, it is a nice song. But it might be the least interesting one on the album.

Too much rock/pop feeling and not enough metal on that song for me

not enough metal?! What does that mean for a song from 1976?

Unfortunately never liked this album. Vocals are good as always though, miles ahead of every other vocalist of the time.

Another great one with one of the best songs ever written (Stargazer). A LIght in the Black is almost as good. As for the rest they are not on the same level, Tarot Woman is a great opener though.

Stargazer is perhaps one of the greatest songs in heavy metal history.

The two opening tracks are very strong, and the two at end are even stronger, but I'm not particularly fond of the middle two. 'Do You Close Your Eyes' especially I could really do without. This could have been a 10 if not for the weaker middle section, but it's still a solid 9.

Am I just mishearing it, or does Dio say "blind as a blat" in the chorus of A Light In The Black?
