Many people were shocked to hear about the tragic death of Bathroy frontman and creator, Quorthon, but as much influential he might be to the Metal scene, another great musician passed away at the end of this year, I'm talking about Windir's vocalist, founder and main composer, Terje Bakken a.k.a. Valfar. Valfar left behind him a great legacy called Windir, a Black Metal band that I suppose most of you are aware of. Personally I don't like to define Windir as a Black Metal band, but as a Viking Metal band, because the Folk Influences are very present. The music, and the Nordic themes are also there. It is now 22 years since the passing of Windir architect and mastermind, Valfar. It is hard to believe how much time has passed since then, and difficult to imagine how many new ears are enjoying extreme metal without stumbling upon the Sognametal specialists. In four albums Windir perfected the "Viking" black metal sound, so do yourself a favour and give one of them a spin - be it the first time, or one of the many time and times again.

There seems to be an endless supply of folk metal bands. Windir is just one of them. Although this sounds like everything else in its genre, likferd is an excellent album.

I disagree with the above poster. This is definitely a way above average album in the genre. Totally awesome album.

Posts: 95 Written by aerobat97 on 01.08.2011 at 02:13 Windir is a melodic black metal band, not a folk metal band even if there are parts of traditionnal instruments such as accordion. This album doesn't sound like an Eluveitie or an Ensiferum album, not at all! It is not closed neither to Finntroll which can be considered as black folk.  Likferd happens to be my favorite Windir album, especially with the mighty and beautiful Fagning!

There are folk influences, but its MBM album, its simply isnipred by narture and place where Valfar lived, he died because was wandering in freezing cold in mountain cabin, he was a nature man, and it inspired him ... musically I like this better as previous ones.

A clear step-down in quality from 1184, but still a fantastic black metal album. 8.8/10 for me.
