Often considered the first true Viking metal album, to this day it continues to be the standard by which all other albums in this sub-genre are judged.

The music is grand, emotional, and epic while at the same time being very simple and straight-forward. It captures the essence of its subject material in a way that was unprecedented in heavy metal in the late 80's. And what I mean by that is even without the lyrics (dripping in Viking lore and Norse mythology as they are), you still get a huge sense of cold-shores, swift raids and smoke filled mead halls.

First true viking metal album or not, it doesn't mattter to me. The level of musicianship here is exquisite and unique. Quorthon was so far ahead of his time when writing this...

Fucking Epic! This offering is arguably the most significant Bathory album of all time. Quorthon ahead of his time indeed.

Epic, one alum is like epic never ending road to Asa Bay, where Dragon ships stand mighty , I love this album, this is why I love Bathory, true epic album, but even Quorthon might play power metal or glam metal and be awesome, true Odinsson , true viking, good album, good epic music, good lyrics

A classic.
Firm place in my all-time top 30, it always kept ever since.
Funny, when talking to "the new generation" of black metal fans today, many guys have never heard of Bathory.

Alright album, but severely overhyped. It tries too hard to replicate the epics on Blood Fire Death such as A Fine Day to Die and the title track, with results that vary from good to decent to just flat-out boring.

"One Rode To Asa Bay" is definitively a classic track from a classic album and rightfully regarded as one of Bathory's best songs.

When I started to think about this Top 3 list, I had "Shores In Flames" and "Father To Sun" in there save, while the final remaining place always changed between "Valhalla" and "One Rode To Asa Bay". Finally, I decided to include "Valhalla" because of the way it combines the metal elements with the choir (in a style that is continued by bands like Ereb Altor).

I honestly wouldn't be able to pick songs from Hammerheart. This is one of my most adored albums in metal; every song is perfect, 11/10 material.

I fully understand. This is a great and beloved album.
Indeed, I would not have seen the need to post the "Top 3 Songs" comment for this album alone. However, this "Top 3 Songs" idea is a systematic approach, which I did for most of the albums in my collection (and therefore I will add them step by step to MS).
In the end, it is a very subjective song choice - especially in this case, as there are basically only great songs on this very atmospheric album.

Don't want to go off-topic too much, but I've been meaning to comment for a while that I find this approach of yours very helpful for people that haven't heard of a certan band or album and need a place to start. It's easier to listen to two or three recommended tracks and decide whether you want to hear the rest of it or not.

I don't see it, too repetitive and boring.
