No where near that outstanding to me. I'm guess then I'm probably with Zaphod on this one. Its just solid psychedelic black metal. I agree the guitar tone, vox and songwriting are all good but they are far from the best that bm has to offer.
Not similar sounding but have you checked out The Ruins of Beverast's debut? That is imo a standout and peerless record and probably my all time fav bm album.

Unlock The Shrine is great, but it suffers from the alternating song structures I think. Not a very natural layout. Still top tier black metal, but I would cite Arizmenda as the better album.

A tip: When you are the only one disliking a modern classic. It makes you look like a douche when you try to put it down!

Yeah, I love Unlock the Shrine but I still would pick Arizmenda over it in a heartbeat. I have listened to this album for about 20 times or so and I only know it since three weeks. It has somehow everything I want from black metal and music in general. The guitar tone together with the vocals, production and the atmosphere connects just perfect with my taste. The fact that its also an unorthodox approach to black metal makes it just more interesting to me.

Hehe, 20 times this album will probably be a year long I guess. The album just feels too long to me. I quite liked the slow parts more where it gets really tragedy sounding and epic, the fast parts feel relatively monotonous and simplistic. The ending of the one of the songs where it got really slow and melodic was awesome but I don't even know what song it is as I listened to it in one go yesterday just to get through it. The excessive wankery in the thread probably made me listen to it in haste but it was a really awesome listen honestly.

A douche can also be seen as someone who thinks for himself. Nothing wrong with a bit of debating, thats why we are here. Everyone here isnt here for the circle-jerk, can I get in?

You are not used to the way we treat mz's dislike for the album mentioned (and a couple of others), so I'm not expecting you to take my comment for what it really was (an intern joke). Don't worry, he'll get it.

Didn't exactly notice the members of circle-jerk posting after my post. Knew it was bound to happen anyway.
The alternating song structures and the variation in song pacing is everything I like about UTS, in fact I enjoy the interludes more than the songs themselves and probably why its still the best bm rec I've heard. This just feels like an hour long track, not that its bad its perfect for a full listen but I prefer it when the individual songs have variation or their own identities in an album, makes it more interesting/memorable for me.

Me ))
Anyways this is still the best album ever (not exaggerating). The most played album for me, and that says a lot given how dense it is.

Within The Vacuum Of Infinity...
It's too dense to be called a vacuum, but they got the "infinite" part right!
This music gives me the sensation of falling, plummeting through a bottomless abyss of monstrous wails and bitter-cold melodies. There are so many layers, so much depth, that my ears almost never tire to pick out little details, latch onto the riffs, and be swept away by the sheer chaos...
Thanks to Maco, X-Ray Rod, and others for recommending this band in the shoutbox!
