humm, after listening to tons and tons of classical instruments going at it, i think i'm just about bored of classical music. i dont know, it doesnt really cheer me up too much. where as if i hear the same instruments being played in irish or celtic folk music, it makes me wanna dance and stuff...not that i can dance.and plus, playing irish stuff on the guitar is a whole lot more fun than classical stuff. and i think i understand why bands like Mago De Oz always seem to be high and happy, like some crazy hippies from the 70's.

so, you got any recomendations? i'm mainly looking for songs with strong violin and/or flute lines. or somthing that can easily be translated onto a guitar. dont know what i'm talking about? here's an example:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rFU_SbH5Gcw

thats just a slower example. ive seen/heard a few violinist going a whole lot faster, and still sound awsome.

you know, stuff you'd imagin being playd at some irish pub with women doing those crazy ballete kinda dances, and everyone enjoying them selves. so you got anything?

One word....Clannad....

The band of Enya and her sister and brothers and uncles....
And they do use guitars as well...so it shouldn't be impossible to find some music created by them translated to guitar only for example....

They're the best Irish band...they have been on top for years....what I like as well is that they have Irish as their first language which makes their Irish songs perfect...for example...sorry to say that but...Irish musicians who have English as their first language should better quit singing in Irish....because they distort this language with their English-speaking person's accent....

oh, sorry coz i forgot to mention, but i got rid of the program i used to download music, so youtube is my source now.

but anyways, thanks for the help.

and i know of dropkick murphys. well, their one song when the video is taking place in a pub, and the song fits in fine with the bag pipes, but they tend to annoy me for some reason.

and yes, canada does have those bands, but i have no link to em. i know, and LOVE lorenna mckennitt, and out of the entire cd collection i have, she is prolly most well known world across, considering she does tons of music. and funny you should mention newfound land. everytime they have a commercial about noofies, they always have irish music in the background.

and this is more or less what i'm talking about:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OzYjjdvuiXk

though i think the guy is playing the song much slower than what it normally should be...but ive never heard of the song, so correct me if i'm wrong

and this. the folkish part starts at about 00:40:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ADTj182rc9A

and i'll check out those bands and stuff in a day or two...wait, i'm off tomorrow, so tomorrow shall be good

and had a violin been slightly 'easy' i would have gotten myself into it coz of irish folk stuff...but that tiny lil thing is really awkward to me, so no violin for me...sad

keep em comming

Are you looking for stuff like this

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RbEKzxu7MVU < Spirit Of The West, the intro is screwed up though.
Awesome Flute Solos.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uZjSZuzA__c < the Dubliners, now thats real Trad Folk, but for some one getting into irish folk, i wouldnt recomend them to you, as they can come across as bland.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emdvW9HB1oM < i think this is more what your looking for though, (wait untill 2:30)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13MQFCfCYdQ < Sinead O'Connor & the Chieftains
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EFzkWsMrNfk&NR=1 < The Chieftains
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y6r_a1d_5aY < The Chieftains
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=26EBG4fQR3o&mode=related&search= < Carlos Núñez and The Chieftains

I Highly Recomend the The Chieftains, as you can see from amount of links i gave for them.

The way i see it is that your looking for more new age celtic stuff, than Irish Folk.

Old Clannad is good...well...but we can't deny the fact that Enya is the best selling article of Ireland....
Cruachan's "Teir abhaile ru" is simply wondrous....well...I liked the Cruachan version as well but their Irish pronounciation sucks major balls...I didn't want to be harsh....but that's true....Clannad should actually co-work with Cruachan....twould be useful for both....I'd enjoy this symbiosis a lot....

hey man. thanks for the links. and going through all of them, i would say that i'm definetly not looking for stuff like the first 2 videos. i think they are more or less closer to american folk music(not country though) with some north western european influences.

the third video you sent was fairly close(yeah, i can be a lil picky)

Sinead O'Connor & the Chieftains thing wasnt exactly i was looking for(fairly close though), but the lyrics forced me to drop my mouth and just stare in awe. and then the music just inhanced that, so i really liked that one. and is it me, or that vocalist sort of looks like taht pop singer from the 80s/mid 90's named Sade or soemthing like that?

The Chieftains sort of remind me of Loreena Mckennitt, which is amazing coz i love her. havnt read the lyrics yet.

gave Clannad and its good to see that enya is still around. havnt heard from her since that 'only time' song of hers. but clannad sounds pretty good. granted enya may be the star of the group, but i would have liked to hear more instrumental than her hymns. but then i came across some of their videos where they sound more folk than have hymns, so i'm kinda confused.... but either way, i would prefer it without any vocals

W-lash: you seem to help me plenty. first with ERA, and now Cruachan. i've only heard 3 or 4 songs by em at random, and seem to be liking em...but then songs like 'some say the devil's dead' seem odd and kinda annoying

the stuff that i'm looking for in irish folk:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qsl_jXXl3Yw ----- just remove the vocalists, the drum, and the guitar. you're left with a violin, a flute and some other stuff i dont know the names of

stuff i'm looking for in celtic folk:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hgv6w8FEbQ

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TCiDm8H1ggU ----i can do without the drums. they sort of make it sound like Enigma's music

stuff i'm looking for in european folk(no idea what country/region it originates from...):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t04li3WX1T4 ---- starts at 00:40

stuff i'm looking for in a violin riff/solo/thing that sounds cool:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Os2uTYD2Mfw ----- starts at 00:40 its the courus i guess

obviously in extremo and mago de oz are metal, and i like em that way. but somtimes i just feel like listening to lighter stuff, and wouldnt really wanna hear em..you know?

so i guess i'm looking for folk instrumentals. Dead Can Dance does tons of instrumentals...but they hardly touched upon celtic or irish folk for some reason

scottish folk music...does that count as 'celtic folk'? i think celtic means music comming out of the british isle.

but in any case, i was listneing to some scottish folk, and a lot of them are talking about some 'fiddel' or somthing. i'm guessing its either a form of a violin, or the way the play is called a fiddel. either way, i liked that too

Fiddle is a violin....perhaps it's a special version of a violin, perhaps it's just another name for the instrument....I amn't sure....

Scottish music counts as Celtic very well....especially if sung in Scottish....

I suggest you all to look up Karen Matheson from a band called Capercaillie....

Scottish counts as Celtic...all nations and languages who speak Celtic languages and have Celtic ancestr can make Celtic music....

I don't agree with you...It's wrong to associate Celts only with British Isles...for also French and Spain have Celtic background...I'm referring to the pre-Roman history of these countries....and indeed....there are Celtic metal bands both in France and in Spain....

The language is called Breton....
I don't know any metal acts who sing in Breton but Dan Ar Braz was the author of the French Eurovision entry in 1996...the song was called "Diwanit Bugale" and it was performed by Karen Matheson and a Welsh singer whose name I can't remember...it was Elaine I think.....

Karen Matheson is the member of a Scottish band called Capercaille....but she usually sings in Scottish...however, when she represented France at the Eurovision, she sang in Breton....Irish singer(and winner of 1996 Eurosong) Eimear Quinn liked "Diwanit Bugale" and made a cover version of it with an Irish band Anuna....

Luckily, I found a video of it....

Check out Christy Moore he's an absolute LEGEND. I lived in Ireland for a year and they get so riled up by his songs over there. Obviously i lived in the west country and it's a lot more patriotic and anti-english over there (Sligo's not too far from an on IRA stronghold) but it's good music and some of the lyrics are hilarious if you can translate them as he has a pretty strong accent in some songs.
