I wanted to finally review a thrash metal album, so I reviewed Judiciary's album, but, to my horror, that's more of a hardcore album. So here it is! I'm finally reviewing a thrash metal album. And a damn fun one, too.

I give thrash metal a lot of flack for sounding just about the same as it sounded in the '80s, but eventually I came to terms with the fact that that's just how it's gonna be. The thrash metal revival came and went and now we're again in times where thrash isn't in such a fantastic shape, but it still gets up every morning to get its bread. And, quite honestly, even if it's not original or anything, a lot of thrash metal released in the past few years has been pretty fun, especially punkier crossover thrash. And here comes Insanity Alert.

With a previous record called Moshburger, you can tell they don't exactly take themselves extremely seriously. And that's a good thing - who in their right mind would want music that is both fun and not self-aware, unless you're looking for the musical equivalent of The Room? And it is that slight self-awareness that makes 666-Pack so good at what it does, meaning that it's not just effective at being crossover thrash through its energy, but also contains enough memorable comical moments to make sure you know that you're not listening to some other record that sounds the same. This is by no means a parody or something that tries to make fun of thrash metal, but something that loves thrash and loves how jovial it can actually be while still being aggressive.

From the S.O.D.-inspired "Ballad Of Slayer" and a song that plays thrash riffs as if they were 8-bit video game soundtracks or "Stop... Slammertime!" to the countless backing gang vocals and light speed riffs, this album is legitimately so corny and cheesy that there's no way that I can't love it wholeheartedly. Every time I give it a listen I discover something new to like about it, so I'd rather not spoil too much of it. Just know that music-wise all but the last track are shorter than three minutes in length, with a lot not even hitting two minutes. Even leaving the gags aside, 666-Pack is a damn solid crossover thrash metal album.

Thus, here is a band that understands thrash metal and how to make fun thrash metal without looking edgy and obnoxious. They came, they fucked shit up, they left.
