Woods Of Ypres in Calgary w/guests - May 19/2011 by Unknown user (20)

From the trendy northwest to the scuzzy southeast, metalheads from all across Calgary decided not to come out and see a show that was mostly worth the miniscule ticket price. An overall sad turn out to say the least, in the grand scheme of things. Possibly because of the people with "jobs" and what not not wanting to come and rock out on a weekday. Who knows. They missed out.

This set alone was worth the money, but alas they got the shit-end of the stick. They got opening band syndrome on a night that didn't have that great of a turn-out at it's peak. That's the test of a good band though - guys who can play with their all, regardless of whether there's 5 people in front of the stage or 500. Titans Eve had everything that was needed to make for a killer show; solid memorable music that can move even the folks who are unfamiliar with the songs, backed by a tight, powerful performance.

Opening band syndrome: when no matter how well a band plays, the crowd is thin and extremely inhibited from lack of drinking. Instead of rocking out like they should have, they stand around with their hands in their pockets, shooting an occasional glance to their group of friends as if to ask "Is it ok to rock out yet?"

By all means this band should have been direct support for Wood Of Ypres, instead they played to a lacking crowd. Oh well, fuck it, a lot of people missed out. I didn't.

Moradin

The next band on was the local ethereal black metal band Moradin, who surprisingly got the best turn out of the evening, most likely because of their debut album being released. Not a whole lot to say about this band, other than thank God they released an album, because this is not a live band at all. It was hard to tell which was more flavourless; the music or the bands performance. There's only so much fretboard-staring, non-movement I can take at a show, the blandness of this set was almost obscene.

Moving along...

Just when I was done being bored with Moradin, this came on. Instrumental, progressive blah blah blah. It struck me as people making pretentious music for the sake of making pretentious music. I would love to write more about this band, but I honestly can't recall any relevant thoughts that went through my head during their set, I was completely distracted by more engaging thoughts going on in my head; like trying to figure out the number of notches on the ridge of a dime. There's a fine line between ambient and "who gives a fuck?", Illuminated Minerva fall under the latter. Either this band is completely aimless, or it's music that just does not translate into the live atmosphere at all.

Thank God. After what seemed like a lifetime of complete mediocrity, the energy got kicked back up again. Sure a few people in the crowd split after supporting their friends in Moradin, but the energy was still great. They really stepped up and saved the show, stamping out why they are the headliners. The people who stuck around until 1am were left satisfied. The music, the performance, the energy - everything was right on key.

No more needs to be said.
