My experience in reviewing so far has long since brought me to a point where I meet all creative style descriptions bands like to decorate themselves with, with a highly skeptically raised eye-brow. Eversin for example like to call themselves 'techno power metal'. Now I don't mind techno, I consider most techno I know as pretty boring, but there's some stuff I like as well. I might not be a big fan of thrash metal, but if it's used to spice up a power metal album it's fine for me.
But in the end it all doesn't matter anyway because it's a blatant lie to begin with. No matter what way you look at it, Eversin are a progressive power metal band, they're a pretty bad one too.
Vocalist Angelo Ferrante has a pretty strange voice. At times he actually sounds similar to a couple of genre-greats (Matt Barlow, Hansi Kürsch). But don't look forwards to it too much, despite the variety his voice always sounds too weak and strained for the music, as well as the strange English, the trademark of nearly all Italian bands. The guitars seem to be trying to pull off lots of cool stuff, fail at it, and in the end just sound annoying. There are a few good solos and a couple of nice, heavier riffs (presumably what the band considers their thrash elements), unfortunately they're in the minority though.
Another annoying aspect of their music is most definitely the keyboard. Like in most metal bands it's only used for very few short piano parts and a couple of 'atmospheric' bits way back in the background. Its other use on Divina Distopia are some scattered, barely audible 'spacey' bits in the background (their techno elements I suppose). No matter how it's used, I'm pretty sure the music would always be better off without it.
Add to all of that the facts that the progressive elements are usually awkward and the songwriting is subpar and it leads me to the conclusion that Eversin's Divina Distopia is really f'ing boring, except for the parts that are annoying.
