Metallica's 2003 release, St. Anger, will most likely always be considered the low point of the bands discography. I'm not sure if I can completely agree with this. I personally believe Load and Reload are worse albums. Mind you, St. Anger is absolutely not a fantastic release. It rambles, has some bad tracks, and sometimes you wonder "what are they doing?" (listen to Hetfield's moans in Invisible Kid). But the album does have energy, something the band has had on about 3 tracks on the last 2 studio discs.

Highlights are "Frantic" and the title track, among others, and the darkness of "Some Kind of Monster" is another highpoint. Other good tracks are "Shoot Me Again", "Sweet Amber", and "All Within My Hands". The others simply have good moments but miss the mark of a great song. This album will always will be looked down upon due to the drums, the sound, and the omission of guitar solos. However, I am willing to guess that this album just may be one of the more important ones the band has ever released.

This album could very well be the first large step the band has taken in a while to making quality music again. The album has great riffs, the best they've done in 10 years. Imagine if this album had better production and guitar solos. I am willing to bet it would be held in higher regard than Load and Reload. Perhaps over time, the respect for this album will grow. Depending on the greatness of the next album, fans may end up realizing St. Anger for what I believe it is: a hopeful step in the right direction.

Six long years after the release of ReLoad, Metallica come back on the scene to show their 8th studio album, St. Anger. Many of you have almost lost all the respect for this band since the release of the black album, many others hate them because of Load and ReLoad and some others have now lost every interest in their music. Actually, what can you all expect from the band who left its early amazing style to get fame and glory on MTV?

I dont know really, Ive heard max 3 songs from this album, and it is 3 songs too much. I will never manage to understand why the hell do they needed this , but.... I wouldnt score it more than 5, no way... And becaue it is by an acomplished band, it deserves no more than 2......

if you wanna know why they needed this, you should watch the movie Some Kind Of Monster, it opened my eyes. and made me enjoy St. Anger a whole lot more. now i dont compare it to the earlier albums anymore, cause whats the point, then it will be always the worst and so on. i have to say that now, i like the album, it has the best lyrics (i.m.o.) that they have ever written(aaargh Im comparing it to earlier stuff), and ok, the music is not the best they have ever done but so what??

Whatever they wanted with it, that kind of music is waste of time. I dont see why I would listen to such thing, only because it's done by (once) great band. Id rather go listen some death metal from an unknown band than that...

it has the best lyrics (i.m.o.) that they have ever written

FRAN-TIC TIC TIC TIC TIC TIC TOCK

I'm madly in anger with you!

etc.

I really don't see how that position is defensible at all. I mean, Metallica were never that advanced lyrically but this is bad stuff compared to anything.

I really like Metallica (My first metal albums were "Kill 'Em All" and "...And Justice For All" when I was 15), and before I heard ST. Anger I thought "It can't be that bad" but after I listened the whole thing I realized that it was something that even a new unknown garage american band could play, just nothing memorable. I Just can't listen to it completely because It is just a torture for me (really!!!), I know that many people here think that Load and Reload are too boring (myself included), but come on, Nu-metal? Nu freaking metal???

This is probably their most hated album because:

- The Napster trial. The fans thought the band turned on them, so everything the band did was criticized. Since it was cool to hate the band , if you hated them you'd be cool! Especially if you say Megadeth is better.

- The production. Lars had never taken the snare off before and it didn't sound right coming from Metallica, a band that had great production on their last 3 albums and were known for it.

- No guitar solos? In a Metallica album? Blasphemy!

I look at the user ratings for St. Anger and see it's the second-worst album ever apparently. Has anyone listened to Megadeth's Risk album? That is by far worse than any Metallica album. Ask any metalhead what their least favorite genre of music is, and an answer you're likely to get a lot of is country. Then ask them what their least favorite Metallica album is and they'll probably say St. Anger. That's funny, because Load and ReLoad (their actual worst albums) are rooted in country but they're somehow better than this album.

Oh wait, the Napster trial somehow made their music worse so of course St. Anger is the worst! How could I be so stupid? Never mind that they're playing with energy again, never mind that the riffs and song structures are more complex than their last 3 albums, and never mind that it isn't another country-influenced ablum. It will be the worst, always and forever.

A note on napster, a band eventually had to step up and do SOMETHING about free DL music. And now we have stuff like itunes where people pay because of it. There's always the smarter crowd that still gets stuff for free but we still pay for albums we respect to support the bands. It had to be done...and there was a lot of retarded hate and bandwagon against Metallica for it. I say fuck the ones who jumped on that bandwagon. But I digress...that's the past.

St. Anger was definitely Metallica's weakest album but it was also an experimental album, with the lack of solo's and the aim for a "garage" feel. Despite it being their weakest, it was absolutely better than anything else out at the time. And some of the songs are actually pretty damn good on the album, even if not up to Metallica par. Unnamed feeling is an increadible track worthy of even older stuff imo. But they've redeemed themselves with Death Magnetic so it's all good =D

Many Metallica haters here, and fanboys too ... Let's face it many people jus bash St.anger , many times even without hearing, because it's a Nu metal album, they heard others saying is sucks so much or they are simple tired of hearing about Metallica.
But, even if you hate it or love, st anger IS just as bad as Load and Reaload. Those albums are nothing speacial and they suck compared to the high standars of Kill, Ride, Master and Justice. ENOUGH SAID.

I've tried to listen to the title track of this album. I couldn't make it past the first chorus, it was too painful to do so. The vocals were honestly the worst I've heard on any CD (except maybe from The Sex Pistols and most 70's punk bands, who were more into providing raw energy than music talent, so I guess they have a bit of a reason), which just rubs salt into the wounds you have if you are aware of Hetfield's previous performances. If this was supposed to be the best song on the album, I don't want to guess what the worst sounded like...

EDIT: I've recently purchased the album just to make sure I wasn't being harsh on it unnecessarily. I've not finished listening to it (can't make it past "Sweet Amber" without putting on something else), but my original opinion of it hasn't really changed (although "St. Anger" is better than it was when I first heard it). There is only one song I actually like ("Frantic") and one with a pretty cool chorus ("Shoot Me Again"), but the rest is a real test of willpower to not give up and turn it off.
