Cold night, it rains the concentration camp is quiet, suddenly a guard spots something, is a figure form, shadowy climbing one of the fences, it's SCAPING! Fire the alarm!!! The sirens soon start, the whole camp is adverted, anyone trying to escape shall meet it's end!
The cold sound of the guitars, the commanding voice, the almost ceremonial drums, this is something I've never heard before, well, it's Martial Metal. Imagine the cold, harsh voice of Rammstein take away all of those electronic elements, add some kick-ass riffs some keys, and a drum (that btw, sounds like a drum machine, wonder if it is), now throw into the mix sound samples of war, machine guns, marches, sirens, is like listening Metal in World War II.
Despite it's weirdness I'm loving every part of this EP, the only word I can use to describe this is cold, from the vocals to the riffing, the sound samples create an atmosphere that is just out of this world, you really fell the whole "war" vibe, and is very original, I've never heard something like this!
All four tracks are sung in German, and of course I don't have the slightest idea of what are they saying, at first I thought that they were a group of Neo-Nazis singing some political tunes, but after reading the info on this band I discovered that these guys are "provocative but non political", so we can rest assure that they aren't spreading crap out there. So, what are they singing about? Maybe someone that knows German can tell me. Really.
I completely forgot to mention that this is the new band of Mr. Hellhammer, the band also features Blasphemer (Mayhem) on lead vocals and Lars Sørensen (Red Harvest) on Keyboards. This reminds me of the last Mayhem release, but with some slight industrial touches here and there, is strange music as I said, hardly can be classified as Black Metal at all, and since I didn't found a genre where this can fit in, let's just say Military Metal, shall we?
There's a whole concept behind the band, like a imaginary empire ruled by a ruthless dictator, but I couldn't find enough info about this, maybe I should ask these guys personally? One thing that I found out was the origin of the band name, Mezzerschmitt, this was a WWII German plane manufacturer.
The band also uses pseudonyms, apart from their usual pseudonyms, in other words pseudonyms of their pseudonyms, Hellhammer as Hauptman Hammer; Blasphemer as Herr Schmitt and Lars as Oberleutnant LS.
Anyway, fans of newer Mayhem stuff and those who want to listen this new project of Hellhammer, might wannna check this out, my final verdict: innovative music, I liked it, hope to get a full-length from these guys soon, until then, I'll wait in the barracks.
