This has to be one of Italy's most well kept secrets, Kardia and this, their 2002 self-released debut album is a little jewel that needs to be shown to the readers.
Kardia is a relatively new band, it was formed in 2001, and just a year after they offered us their debut album "Frammenti Di Violenzia Controllata" translated is something like "Fragments Of Controlled Violence", anyway, Kardia offer us a great Gothic Rock piece here, with influence that goes from Joy Division and The Cure to Rammstein.
As soon this Cd is on the record player, the first thing that appeals the listener will be the singer, Paolo, he has a great and powerful voice, without trying to reach too high on the notes, or without trying to sound low and deep. Another great thing is that every single song is singed in their native language, Italian, in my opinion, great choice, since the language complements perfectly the music.
The 6 song debut album begins with "Kubo" a keyboard driven piece reminiscent of some eighties songs, great chorus on this song, second track; "Nero" is definitively one of my favorites, great tempo variations, and great chorus and catchy lines; "Brucia" is an ambivalent song, faster and aggressive parts countered by melodic and mellower ones.
"Trascendenza" is a mid-paced song, that slowly builds up, and manage to create some incredible aggressive moments, I love the part when they scream "niente!"; "Nenia" is a song with a contemporary touch, electronic samples and even some modern rock influences can be perceived here; the closer "Ancora Lontano" has a progressive touch and some piano lines create a great atmosphere here.
As I was saying, with only six songs and almost half an hour of music, Kardia managed to suck me in their little world, a world full of different sounds, diverse landscapes and atmospheres.
My only hope is that other will hear in Kardia, what I've heard, a great underrated new band, that could use some distribution and why not, a record contract, best of lucks to these guys.
