“We are doom metal and heavy metal. Traditional, epic, raw, and heavy! Doom ‘n’ roll - Fuck you, we’re Lucifer's Fall”. Rarely do bands provide such apt descriptions of their sound.

I admit that the above description and the cool nicknames (the vocalist is the ‘Deceiver’, the guitar players are called ‘Invocator’ and ‘Heretic’ respectively, the bass player is the ‘Cursed Priestess’, and the drummer is ‘The Hammer’) had me sold even before I played III - From The Deep. Then, just one listen of this Reverend Bizarre-meets Pentagram-meets Saint Vitus, doom specimen was enough to get me completely hooked.

The first striking feature is the eccentric vocals. Deceiver is a convincing narrator of Lovecraftian tales of horror and mystique, and I cannot see how one would not be intrigued by ‘octopedal copulation’ or by a ‘reverend buttfucked by the ancient ones’? Deceiver’s voice is high in the mix and he passionately sings the blasphemous lyrics in a way that every word sounds special. I expect people to either love him or hate him; I love him because he is so expressive and at times he sounds like a grittier and more ominous Nick Cave. When he repeats the phrase ‘Join the cult’ towards the end of “Man Of God”, the only thing I can think of is ‘Yes, I want to join! Where do I sign up?’.

Then it’s the guitars. The album is based on riffs and there are not that many of them because this is doom metal, not tech-death, but they are good and heavy. The pace is generally slow, but Lucifer's Fall change to a faster gear halfway into songs like “Trident Steel” and “Man Of God”, while “Doom ‘N’ Roll” is the shortest and speediest track, totally justifying its title. “Reverend Revenant” is the grooviest of the bunch and an instant earworm with a very memorable chorus and an infectious melody. There are not that many melodic parts but when these do appear they make one hell of a difference, and there are enchanting solos in all songs; “The Cave” in particular features two of the best ones. The drums and the bass are penetrating through the layers of darkness thanks to the - excellent for the style - production, and the rhythm section really drills into your skull and has sex with your brain.

My favourite part of the album is six minutes into “Across The Void”, when Deceiver urges to ‘Praise doom - Worship death - Cult of the Ancients rise’, The Hammer goes into drum solo mode, the lead guitar plays a morose melody and then gradually the whole band gives it their all until the end of the song. Superb stuff. Seriously, I don’t know what else to tell you, if you like doom metal of any kind, do not miss III - From The Deep.

Doom metal album of the year contender.

“Fuck your religion
Fuck you right to the grave
Bow down to the might of the Old Ones
Join the Cult
In this new bestial age”

Great review this album has intrigued me, I admit it's taken me some time to really get into modern doom metal, I suppose it's getting used to the slow tempo riffs, and overall dreary sound that i'm not used to hearing, but now since joining this site, i'm discovering new doom metal acts such as these, and starting to appreciate doom metal more.

Great review! Thanks for the suggestion! Yeah, I love that part you mentioned in Across the Void too. Trident Steel and The Cave are awesome in every way: solos, rhythm, lyrics, performance
