Draugar is a one man black metal band from America. With all shame, I must admit that I didn't know anything about this band before I heard this record, so I figured I should have a look at their official website and read some of their biography, but apparently they don't have an official website. So I thought I can maybe read the reviews of some other reviewers about this album so maybe I can find some interesting information in them, but I must say that I was totally shocked when I saw all the negative and bashing reviews for this album. If you don't understand the music, then don't review it, because it's annoying as hell to see someone bashes an album just because he can't understand the music.
This album is raw, misanthropic and hateful. The song's pace mostly travels from mid-tempo to fast, with extreme vocals that probably not everyone can take. The atmosphere in most of the songs strongly reminds me of Xasthur - very dark but also melodic. Yes that's right, this is not just a fast and speedy black metal album, it also have a strong melodic aspect (I'm sorry for all of you who can't hear it) which prevents the album from sounding monotonous and becoming boring.
The production of this album is completely awful and shit, but you know what? That's the whole point of it. The bad production makes this album sound even more "grim" and evil than it would sound if it had a good production. But I'm sure not all of you can understand how bad production can be good, and I guess that is why I think this album is something for the elite black metal fans only and newcomers of this genre will probably hate it.
The only thing that I really disliked about this album was the album cover that I think looks quite silly actually. But well, that doesn't change the fact that this is really good music.
