Finland is a country with a huge roster of bands; to tell you the truth I hate most of them because they're actually sort of gay but that's not the point, the point is I've found a partially good band emerging from this country, a band which manages to craft Metalcore with Thrashy riffs, Heavy Metal and even a touch of Emo without sounding irreverent or stupid. The band's name is Retrogression
It's hard for me to dig a Metalcore band actually, but when that same band adds this kind of genres it's at least appealing to the ear. So I actually heard this demo and, to my amazement, I truly liked it a bit, the four tracks kept me listening with attention from the beginning to the end, sometimes I was blown away by the execution and sometimes I was disappointed by the clean vocalizations thrown in the mix, at times I thought "wow that's new in my books" and at some riffs I said "well, I've heard that before?" and the balanced statements kept coming until the CD stopped. I finally thought, "Well, the vocals sounded Emo-ish but at least they're harmonious?and damn the music is fucking amazing".
To tell you the truth I can't say those vocals killed the CD because I can't conceive that last track ("Misery Blooms") without the melodious vocal intro; though I could recommend the band to go easy on those clean vocals, they have massive potential and it would be idiocy to see them banished and drowned in comparisons with Burst or other Metalcore acts just for the shrieks+cleans combo thrown in the album; Retrogression has the elements to achieve great things, they just need to create explosive songwriting and better structures that's all.
Demos are always hard to review if you ask me, a reviewer can't compare a demo's quality with anything else as some of them are recorded at basements and even bathrooms (have you ever heard of Prostate?). So anyway, I received a demo which, in sound quality, it's almost as good as a full-length?damn that was hard to say indeed. We must keep an eye on this band, I just hope they keep the good work coming.
Final Verdict: Very good for a demo.
