Some things never die. I thought the experimental funk thrash era had ended a long time ago with the meltdown of Suicidal Tendencies but somehow a Canadian band from Vancouver managed to revive the flame of aggressive funk with "And Still We Kill". This band is called The Joint Chiefs and it is a trio of talented musicians nicknamed Dentor (guitars, vocals), Hoss (bass, vocals) and Wigs (drums).

While the production is almost non-existent, the guitar and bass lines are still clear enough to appreciate the work of those guys. The vocals sound very close to Mike Muir period "Join the Army". Overall though, The Joint Chiefs present a heavier sound than Suicidal Tendencies, insisting more on riff repetitions. There are definitely alternative influences here and there, engulfing more power into the songs.

Even though the record is only about half an hour long, it holds some hard-hitting material. Without being revolutionary, "And Still We Kill" has serious thrash potential and more importantly bright ideas.

At the end of the day, "And Still We Kill" is a decent album, which suffers from a serious case of medium production, but it still strikes by its choices in both musical direction and composition. Suicidal Tendencies fans will dig this quite a bit, with a mixed feeling of melancholy. With the hope of a better production in the near future, The Joint Chiefs could become the beacon of the aggressive funk vibe renewal. Give it a serious try.
