Making my life of a reviewer easier, Mumakil include the perfect metaphor for their music right on the cover of Behold The Failure: a massive motherfucker of an elephant about to trample an entire army. So yes, a huge elephant is a brilliant tool of mass destruction (just ask Hannibal) but it is also a fucking stupid animal.
Mumakil's music is exactly the same - their brand of brutal death/grind is absolutely crushing and destructive in every way imaginable; however, it is also notoriously safe and unadventurous, mimicking and often one-upping the likes of Brutal Truth, Nasum or Rotten Sound but never introducing anything fresh or new to the style. Don't get me wrong - one thing needs to be pointed out here: Mumakil completely slays. Their riffs are catchy, the growls appropriately vicious and deep and the drums blast away like no tomorrow (even some hyperblasts are present). The album is also produced impeccably, with clarity given specifically to the drums. Without a doubt, as far as vanilla death/grind is concerned, Behold The Failure sits right atop the food chain with 27 cuts of equally catchy music.
Nevertheless, this is still pretty dumb stuff. Watching an elephant rampaging through an army, destroying buildings, crushing heads and impaling women and children with its tusks might be fun, but keep in mind that all you need to scare the beast away is a small mouse. Alas, behold Mumakil's failure to realize that ingenuity always triumphs over brute force. This album is fun but not relevant - a somewhat sorry state considering the band's obvious abundance of talent.
