I'm always a bit skeptical when I have to listen to compilations, especially when it's a gathering of b-sides tracks. I really like Danko Jones in general but I know too that he can be uninspired sometime and if some songs have been unpublished in the past, it was probably not for nothing right? That's weird actually because B-Sides, that's the name of this new release, features 27 songs and a lot are just excellent. Don't know why they haven't been published but we won't care about it anymore, after all we have a way to listen to those songs now!
First conclusion, the product looks cool. The CD is printed like a vinyl disc (where b-sides were automatically published in the past). It's just a little detail but it looks cool! Second conclusion, the majority of the songs featured on the album are really good and I still don't understand why songs like "The Rules", "My Problems" or "Choose Me" for example haven't been used in the albums? Don't expect anything new here, this is pure Danko Jones, a mix of powerful bluesy Rock N Roll and Hard Rock with a certain Punk spirit but it's well done and hyper catchy.
The lyrics are still a bit the same (girls, sex etc) and are a bit cliché but that's how all Danko Jones' songs are anyway and even if it can sounds childish this is just good fun in the end (and you don't have to take it too seriously really...). All in all, even if on 27 songs, some ones are not really useful (ok it's cool to have the edited version of the great "First Date" on this release, but well?), B-Sides is a really nice compilation and the fans of the Canadians should have a look at it, at least just to try, to discover some really nice little jewels.
B-Sides is not the ultimate mega must but it could be stupid on a side to miss it. It all depends if you're a die-hard fan who wants everything or not but seriously, even if you're just attracted by Danko Jones' music, I think that B-Sides deserves a try. As a fan, I can tell you that I will listen to this CD like if it was a new album. When you add too that those songs are more in the spirit of "Sleep Is The Enemy" (his best album to date) than "Never Too Loud", I think that you understand what I mean. No really have a look at it if you just like good Rock N Roll!
