Space Metal!

***Currently working through suggestions and adding some spacey non-metal things when they cross my mind***
As a lover of all things sci-fi I find metal to be the most accommodating of genres when it comes to themes of space/aliens. This is a list of those albums which use this theme and/or evoke an overall 'spacey' atmosphere and which I find particularly intriguing and enjoyable. No order for now and a work in progress (recommendations most welcome) Last Updated: 9th April 2014

There's a decent post-rock album out this year from the band Ancients, called Star Showers On The Euphrates. It both sounds spacey and deals with space in its song titles.

How about "Long Distance Calling" , I think it's even better than Atoma.

I remember hearing their latest one, didn't think much of it to be honest. But I'll reconsider it in terms of "Spaciness" Would you recommend any of their other albums?

Luca Turilli's "Prophet of the Last Eclipse" then.

Yeah Darkspace sound great to me, I've only heard their 3rd album (which is already up there). And they easily qualify, one of the most "spacey" atmospheres on this list.

Indeed, it is here... I missed it because you have wrong album title, also the band's name spelled differently I must admit that careless looked at this list, but caught up

So I do Fixed that, should be Darkspace rather than Dark Space. And I should give their other albums a listen, I'm sure they won't be too dissimilar.

You're right. By the way, it's difficult to find a weak release in their discography.

Great list! I'm always in need of more spacey metal haha. One album I could recomend to you is the album "To The Void" by Ixion. It's very atmospheric and space themed, so hope you'll enjoy it.

No idea how I managed to overlook your suggestion for so long, I've given it a few listens and added it now. Definitely fits in the list!

Entire Arjen's discography should be on this kind of lists. I am just blown away with the background stories that this guy comes up with.

He is the go-to-guy for a good sci-fi theme/story. Figured I shouldn't flood the list with his work, so I just put the ones which perhaps depend more heavily on the whole space theme.

Depends on how you think about "djent". Being that Sol Niger Within predates "djent" by like a decade (Sol Niger Within was released in 1997) one could argue that it is not "djent-y" at all, but since it was written by Fredrik Thordendal (of Meshuggah) using a 7 string guitar it does have that really thick, chunky early Meshuggah tone to it and since Fredrik writes a good deal of Meshuggah's music it is very obviously a Meshuggah side project.

Although I personally wouldn't call it "djent-y" because it doesn't really have that infamous sound for which the onomatopoeia "djent" is coined from but it is very obviously played on an extended range guitar. The actual "djent" tone in their guitars didn't really come about though until 2002's Nothing release when they decided to start using 8 strings guitars; Nothing though was actually written and recorded with 7 string guitars that were tuned like 8 string guitars since the company [Nevborn] who was building their 8 string guitars hadn't actually finished building the 8 string guitars by the time of Nothing's recording.

I think that answers my question! From what you're saying I'll be more likely to enjoy it if it isn't as firmly rooted in that djent sound which I often find really monotonous. You might call it ... pre-djent? Or at least in Fredrik's earlier style, before the djent thing takes hold.

Main priority for me though; it sounds spacey!

Nice list, I didn't know there were so many space metal albums You didn't like Star One - Victims Of The Modern Age and Arcturus - Sideshow Symphonies? I think those were good albums too. Also Thy Catafalque's lyrics, although in Hungarian, usually deal with space and travel, and the music has a spacey feel too.

Thanks, and some good suggestions. Initially I had planned to have only a few albums at most per band.. but looking back up at the list now and don't see why I shouldn't put them all in there really. Especially if they're all fitting. Added the first two, and I'll have to look into Thy Catafalque some more, I remember that their latest was really pleasant listening, I've still got a vivid impression of the track "Ko Koppan." It's one of those songs I can hear over and over again on a loop it's just that captivating.
