I'm with musclassia. Immediately reminded me of Mirror Reaper. Tbh not super interesting

I'm gonna go against the grain it seems and say that it doesn't remind me THAT much of the Mirror Reaper one more than it reminds me of most of his other works. Dude just has a very recognizable style. Each picture seems to have somewhat similar concepts but distinct enough to still feel fresh enough for me.

Kinda ungrateful to expect a 60yo man to change his own style that he conjured from a lifetime of experience because after about 10 artworks in recent years you started to notice that they're all in the same style.

He and Elijah Tamu are honestly responsible for most of the best artworks of the past two years.

Also yeah I'm glad we got over Seth.

For one reason or another most of my friend circles and relationships have consisted of artists and this comment hits the nail on the head.

These people typically craft out a style unique to them over years based on their own personal influences and interests but because a bunch of other people start using their stuff all of a sudden, it goes from brilliant and mesmerizing to bland and derivative.

Sorry they became successful and renowned so they can pay rent and eat and finally pay off their student loan debt. Is "The Raft of Medusa" any less awesome because it just so happens to adorn the cover of like 50 albums? Please.

Wasn't talking about style, more like subject matter and colour palette. At this point he's reminding me of Paulo Girardi, who just became less exciting with each band that used it. To be completely honest though he's too much of a lesser Beksinski for me to be continually impressed. I dig his art, but funnily enough in the serious "art" world he'd probably be laughed out of a gallery for being so similar.

I guess metal heads will always like their glowing, yellow, eerie hooded giant motif, even 5 iterations down the line, though.

Also, Elijah Tamu needs to put down the fucking red paint brush for a moment

The former might have to do with him doing his work commercially and his clients specifically expecting similar stuff. Girardi seemed to be even more in demand and there's only so much variation you can do when so many people want a piece because of the style that you already built.

I'd be curious to hear some visual art expert opinion on him.

Pretty sure this one wasn't a commission, but rather one the band picked out and ponied up some cash for as I've seen it on blogs.

I don't begrudge anyone for making money from their art, but it's still always going to be open to opinion all the same, just like the music it represents. This one just feels like kinda bland at this point, especially compared to some of his other work.

I don't think I'm being too unfair: 5 of his 11 metal album contributions have included a hooded giant figure of some kind. Unless hooded giant is a style, and not a theme / subject, I'd say that rates quite high on the repetition o' metre. This one just feels less evocative than some of his other ones.

Stellar artwork! The Accuser was a solid release! High hopes

absolutely.

and the album overall is such a grower. i got hooked on ever so bold and then the rest of the album grew as well.

When I saw these guys a few months ago with Ensiferum and Kalmah, they played an instrumental set of this album, and I was completely enraptured by how smooth as whiskey the music was. The vocals as well are top notch. Definitely a contender for top black metal album of 2019.

Really liked this album. I like the chanty bits even more than the black metal. Also this kind of atmosphere is a lot used nowadays especially in drone and doom. I hope it's not overdone. Here in this album its just the right amount and it sounds excellent.
